Mileage Computer Issues

I have a pristine 2006 4Runner V6 SR5 4WD. When I drove it off the lot (with 1 mile on the odometer!), the mileage computer showed range left to go at 410 miles on a full tank. As the years went by, a full tank started to show the range to go as less than 410 miles. It's been maintained perfectly, just completed a 30K major service and I was hoping that would tell the computer everything was back up to OEM spec. Yet, when I fill up the tank, the Mileage Range Computer now shows about 360-365 miles to go (after a tank top-off); major service, new plugs, fluids, etc., what gives? 410 miles on a full tank to 360 miles for a 4Runner that's been pampered?; does anyone know what's wrong? Does the computer need to be calibrated (the dealerships sure don't know) or is it something else? Thank you for any insight on this problem.

When you reset the avg mpg it doesn't reset the total miles avail. It would take several full tanks of ideal conditions (getting 20mpg or so) and the total would creep back up and settle on 410 (or close). Mine settled on 425 several times. I have been using my 4Runner in the woods to pull trees lately. My overall mpg is down, naturally. Last fill mine said 367. The other thing that will make it creep back up is wait until 1/4 tank or less to fill up.

You have to understand that the on-board computes an average based upon the last reset. Average fuel mileage on any given vehicle is not a cast-in-stone value. It can vary significantly from tank to tank.

I suggest that you reset all the values often. You'd also be surprised to find out how inaccurate it is if you began hand calculating your fuel mileage. It's not uncommon for the onboard to read 2-3 MPG to the high side.

The only thing wrong is your perception. Read the OM.

I just filled my tank the other day and my range was 445 miles. That is the highest I have ever seen it. Because of the nice weather I havent used AC im sure this helps. I always fill up with 1/4-1/8 tank left, and most of my driving is 65-70 mph going to and from work. I usually reset my computer 3-4 times a year.

You v6 guys are lucky. My V8 gives me 340.

I never pay attention to the miles per tank value. All I watch is the avg mpg value. I'll have to check the next time I fill-up since I've been averaging 23 or more MPG (per the overly generous onboard) back and forth to work (mostly 65 MPH for about 20 miles of highway, a few hills). That should put my miles per tank at about 529 or so.
