How many miles can you get from the power steering pump? I replaced my alternator a while ago and things up front "quieted down" - but something up there now making noise. I have 245k on the original...

It depends on when it wants to fail. I've seen them go forever. You need to pin point the noise and not just guess and throw parts at the issue.

Depends how long its been running power steering fluid. Most japanese cars are designed to use ATF in the steering system.

It could just be low, also may have developed a leak.

In a perfect world, you would never change out a ps pump. Just the fluid. Couple good writeups on this site, poke around and maybe you can save your system by flushing with ATF (automatic transmission fluid)

Lots of people with 400,000 plus miles on the original power steering pump. Just bc it makes a noise, doesnt mean its done. However, if the fluid leaked, gotta ask why?

I had mine go last year around 252k. Mine started whining one morning. Within a week, I had no PS. Swapped in a used unit, did a flush, and it's been working great ever since.

Could be worth a shot! Just make sure to flush your fluid. That's what ultimately led to the failure of mine.

But if you just delete the ps dont you get more horsepower technically?

I replaced mine at 140k because it was whining.
Bought a reman from NAPA…don't go that route !! I replaced that one 2 more times before buying a used one on ebay.
They all had bad bearings and squealed. It wasn't the fluid because right after I put the first one in ( howled, not just squeaked..) I replaced the steering rack so changed the fluid.
There are only a couple of places in this country that rebuild stuff and they don't seem to be very good at it.

Easy to find, best way to go. Usually they just leak and Toyota should have a Power Steering Rebuild kit available. I just rebuilt one on a ES300, it was just leaking. Perfect now.
