This is my first 4runner, and I am picking it up (LTD 1999) on friday. I just wanted to make sure that with the 66,000 miles on it I will be happy and not have any problems.....any input would help!

66k miles should be no prob, provided routine maintanence was done regularly.....if its from a dealer, were you abe to get a previous service history for it? that would give you some insight as to the care it was given.

:iagree: Getting a Carfax report is also a good way to make sure it has a clean history. If you have a mechanic you know pretty well, have them check it out, too.

Never hurts to be careful when buying used, even if you know the prior owner.

One problem that is showing up often on 3rd gen 'Runners is failure of the rear axle oil seals. This seems to begin at about 60-70K miles and become more frequent as miles accrue. It lets diff lube seep into the rear brake drums, ruining the rear brake shoes. Folks who've had the problem repaired (not cheap, BTW) seem to have encountered a rapid reoccurance in a lot of cases.

When the problem has become really bad, the inside of the rear wheel rims may show splatters of diff lube. If you see this, for sure there's a problem. If not, it's no guarantee that there isn't a smaller leak that's on its way to being a big one.

OTOH, my '98 Limited was a wonderful, trouble-free vehicle that still had the original tires and brakes when I traded it at 75K miles. I still sorta miss it!
