Any help is appreciated with these plugs?

What color smoke? Those plugs look like they're fouled. Too rich of a fuel mixture.
running smoothly?

Grey maybe bluefish smoke. Foul smell not sweet.

Plugs are dry. No residue. Slightly oily on the threads.

Sorry first timer in this area.

Symptoms of burning oil. Are you losing oil between oil changes? When was the last time pcv valve was changed?
how many miles on the motor?
How long has it been smoking for?

I bought it yesterday for $500. She said it started smoking the night before and just wanted it gone. It was prob smoking a while just got bad. There's oil all over the valve cover. It's clearly leaking.

Pcv looks terrible too.

Thanks for the help so far!

WTF OP you just said you bought this with a blown head gasket ?????? from your thread

Today I woke up and thought "if I ever see a 3rd gen with a blown head gasket for $500 I'm gonna buy it." 3 hours later I opened craigslist and there was a black 97 SR5 manual with 4wd and a blown head gasket.. which I now own.

I'm confused

With ever single plug like that I'd first look at simple things such as oil level overfilled. PCV valves are cheap enough to throw a new one on there. But if it's either the valve seals or piston rings (a dry/wet compression check can determine which the culprit is), some serious neglect had to happen for each cylinder to be affected like that.

I assumed blown head gasket. I was wrong I think. Happens to me from time to time.

Blue smoke indicates burning motor oil, black probably too rich gasoline mixture and white means blown head gasket.
IMPORTANT: Start with a COLD engine:
Remove radiator cap, start the engine, wear goggles and look for continuous bubbles coming out in the radiator (If positive: blown head gasket)
While engine running at IDLE, pull the dip stick and look for any vapor coming out, no vapor is good. Rev a bit and see any signs of oil drops splashing out from the dipstick tube.

Plugs

Replace them........:rip: they have some blow through..
Cover your electrical equipment, Change your Air Filter, Oil filter and Oil. Clean your motor and let it run to dry then drive it
See what the new plugs look like after a few miles and where your Leak if any is...

Outside chance the plug wires and/or coils are a cause, but the PCV valve, air filter and other consumables need checking as a matter of course. A compression test will tell the tale...hope it's something you can remedy sans rebuild! Still a great deal on a starter truck. Keep us posted.

You might have gotten lucky and only need a little TLC in the engine bay, plug wires, oil, pcv are all easy enough that if you do them and it doesn't help your not out much time or money. VC is a little different, but once again your main cost with that is time, the gaskets are cheap. (Fingers crossed) that's all you need!!

Changed oil, filter, plugs, pcv, air filter and battery...

At first crank up the smoke was billowing just like the night before. I went ahead and drove it up the street to see what would happen. Got a 1/2 mile down the road and popped the hood. There was smoke coming from the engine compartment and still heavy from the tail pipe.

I drove around a bit more, just a few miles and noticed the smoke decreasing. Let it idle for about 10-15 minutes while I got some stuff done outside and now the smoke is reduced to a light flow. I noticed dirty oil coming from the tail pipe , not dripping but a small amount accumulating on the lip. Now no smoke from the engine and a small amount from the exhaust, seems to increase with acceleration.

Smoke smells foul. Greyish.

Anybody got any recommended next steps?

Dual threads are annoying so I'm moving this over to the original...

the build thread
