minimum size for coolant reservoir?

if you don't know already, i'm mid dual battery build and am using the tank out of a 1989 mitsu galant or at least i think so, found it in a pull apart...anyways, fits perfectly between the airbox and the front grill...but am concerned with capacity ...is there a minimum size on these things? just to be clear it doesn't from there does it?

look at your old overflow bottle, and figure out how much it holds, there should be a line on it saying full or hot/cold -something like that, anyhow fill the stock one to that, then dump that into the new mitsu overflow bottle, and mark where the level comes up to. theres your new tank.

I’m in the process of buying an aluminum cylindrical coolant expansion tank (with sight glass) and I wanted to know the capacity of the OEM unit. I could not find this information in my owner’s manual or anywhere on the internet. I removed the OEM tank and filled it up with water to take some measurements using a clear cookware container with lines in ounces.

Indicator Lines
LOW - 3 ounces
FULL - 24 ounces
FILLED UP TO THE NECK - 60 ounces

Anyway, I don’t know if this will be helpful to anyone else, but obviously I am going to purchase an expansion tank with at least a 60-ounce capacity.

I had the same problem when going dual battery. I went to the parts store and asked for the smallest overflow bottle they had. They gave me this one. It's about 2/3 the capacity of the stock bottle, maybe a bit less. Has not been an issue at all though. Good luck with the dual battery, they are a pain to fit in there.

Large bike bottle was my first version but there just wasn't quite enough room- so bigger than that (coolant is hot in this pic, very little room for more expansion)

My current version is the original tank. Tight, but fits without touching anything.

This Scott Drake Mustang coolant tank might be a good option for some of you. It is long and narrow and looks like it will fit in the tight space on the driver side of the radiator (near where the OEM expansion tank fit). From a video I watched it looks to be 3” x 1” x 17”. There are many different dimensions posted on the internet, so there may be various versions or just inaccurate info.

It really depends on your climate. The more extreme temps you have hot or cold the more room you need in the reservoir. You need enough in there to let the system pull it in when cold, and a big enough bottle that it doesn’t overflow when hot.
