minor ignition issue

On my 97 sr5 5 speed 3.4l, it has been not always registering that my foot is on the clutch when starting so it wont start, so i sometimes have to go back multiple times turning the key to off and pressing and releasing the clutch, if it does this now i press clutch start cancel and not worry about it. The ignition is fine i just dont understand why it doesnt always register that the clutch is engaged. Any thoughts?

Something to try...

I recently purchased my T4R (5 speed) and had issues with the cruise control... it wouldn't engage. I traced the problem to the clutch pedal... there are a couple of position sensors that tell the ECU whether the clutch is engaged (all the way down) or disengaged (all the way up).

If the start safety circuit does not receive the signal from the clutch engaged sensor, no start is allowed... Look at the FSM (Factory Service Manual), specifically the section on adjusting the clutch pedal freeplay and travel. this will also show you how to adjust the two position sensors.

I had this happen to me. I guess I push the thing too hard. There is a switch which gets pressed when you push the clutch pedal in. It got pushed out of the mount and wouldn't let the car start.

Try feeling around and push the switch back into the mount.

I don't think the quality of the pedal assembly is very good because mine also has issues. Not with ignition, but my pedal was squeaky as hell so I checked it out and the pedal spring was broken in half and grinding on one of the bolts. Little bit of chassis grease fixed it, but it made my car smell like shit

Ignition issue.

Hi. I was wondering if you have resolved this issue you were having and what were your findings? I have purchased a 99 sr5 and have the exact problem. I havent tried the clutch release button yet, but I find it not starting right away like a long delay. I will push in the clutch harder then it will go. Sometimes I have to try 2 or 3 times to get it to turn over. I was wondering myself it was the ignition but the service records show ignition coil was recently replaced. Could it be a starter too possibly? Anyway I would be interested if you have found out anything? Thank you for your post. Shawn

The torsion spring was broken in half?

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm scouring the forum for how people solved the squeaky pedal problem, so that's why I came here to ask what folks found out in the time since this thread was opened.

Your post is the first one I've seen where anyone said that the double-coil torsion spring literally broke in half.

Certainly, mine was eaten about 1/4 of the way through, so it's possible to break, but this is the only mention I've seen so far that says it actually broke.

Anyway, all of us initially greased away the squeak when we didn't realize what the underlying problem was, but now that we know the root cause, grease is the wrong answer.
