Missed Signs in Toyota Recalls

I know this has been discussed a lot lately on this forum but can any of you relate to this statement as I can

"During the investigation, Toyota told NHTSA it believed complaints by Kronholm, a retired Associated Press editor, and others were attributed to "extensive media coverage" and many of the problems cited by consumers -- including lurching when the vehicle came to a stop and engine idle speed changes when the vehicle was stopped -- were "minor drivability concerns." Kronholm's case was closed in August 2008 without a defect finding."

My 4R does this from time to time, and I have to press firmly on the brake at a stop so I dont nudge the person in from of me.

my 4runner does it also, but i noticed on mine that it did it more often when i would use lower grade gas, it does it alot less now that i put shell 93, now a days it only does it when the a/c is on

My 06 4Runner has done this from day one. I admit that I also had to learn to press the brake a little harder that I did with my previous car. That does solve the problem, though. The engine doesn't seem to fight back or anything like that. As long as I'm applying consistent pressure to the brake, it's fine.

I've always attributed the lurching to the change in engine RPM brought on by the fact that the A/C compressor cycles on and off. I've always thought that a software change might smooth things out... the engine control should know when the A/C is about to change state.

I experience the same effect, but I have written it off to a lower-speed stall converter in the tranny. I think if you pay close attention when you drive your other rides, you will notice that the 4R has less "stall time" than your others.

Every vehicle I've owned with an automatic transmission has done this when the compressor cycles on if I'm stopped at a red light. It's completely normal. The ECU is raising the idle speed to compensate for the extra drag on the engine when the compressor clutch cycles on. Keep in mind that the A/C does not have to be on for the compressor to engage. Defrost mode also engages the compressor.

Our Acuras (both of them) do it, and our old Infiniti did it too.

When my fan is on higher then the low setting (heat or AC on) my 08 4runner with 13k miles on it DOES NOT lurch or clunk at stops. when it is off the rpms tend to pick up and drop off from time to time.

I have to keep my foot on the brakes firmly to prevent my 4runner from surging forward.Something I have never experienced before owning a toyota.Maybe it's toyota's way in making sure our legs are getting exercise.:lmao:
