Missing oil dipstick and tube after service

My local Toyota dealer replaced both exhaust manifold gaskets today. Once I arrived home, I crawled underneath for a quick visual check. Sadly, the passenger side was covered in oil down near the bottom of the block, and the skid plate had a puddle of oil. When I tried to check my oil level, I noticed that the dipstick and tube are missing.

OK, so they forgot to reinstall the tube. I'll be sure to have them address the problem first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime I want to know: where does the tube enter the engine? I'd like to cover the hole, but I cannot find it.

Don't worry where the hole is.
Call the dealer and have them tow the vehicle to their shop and have them install a new dipstick, change the oil and clean the entire engine and underneath of the vehicle.

I assume that the low oil light on the dash did not come on.

The hole where the dipstick tube goes into, usually is just above the oil pan on the block.

they almost totaled your rig man!

my old roommate totaled his suv because he cracked the dipstick tube after checking the oil one day. pressure built up and hemorrhaged all the oil while doing 65 on the highway. engine seized he ignored the light for about 5 minutes.

that is just plain stupid on the dealers part. Totally shows their lack of professionalism........... its dealers like this that give the rest of us reason to second guess them. I know dealers sometimes do a job half a$$ed, this just proves it.......... geez.

Yeah, people make mistakes, and in this case they were quick to remedy the problem. That's also a sign of professionalism. They sent the technician to my house with the dipstick and tube first thing this morning. I added one quart of oil. Job done.

I view it as an honest mistake. The tech and the service writer apologized, which was good enough for me.

The oil light was not on. The drive home was an easy six miles. After I posted last night, I took one more look at the oil pan area and found the hole. It is just above the right rear corner of the oil pan, just like you said. Thanks.

We indeed all do, it is; however, unfortunate that many times little mistakes can lead to catastrophic failures, i.e.: missing oil dipstick tubes, forgetting to put an oil filter on, or even oil in the motor. These are all things I've seen and/ or heard of (to mention a few). But we indeed all make mistakes. This is one of the reasons why there's insurance for these dealerships/ mechanic shops.

Once they (the dealers) were working on my 4runner to replace a seal on my engine and they asked if I wanted to replace the serpentine belt while they are at it, I said sure why not. when they finished the job, i opened the hood and look and something didnt look right, they did not put on the serpentine belt correctly. you know how it goes under or over certain pulleys. At one spot it was reversed. so stupid.

now I take my car to a mechanic my friend recommended. he has his own shop and he is very good.

Sounds to me they made good. Good to hear. When I had my Grand Cherokee, dealer left a cordless wrench on TOP of my motor. When I got home, I got a call from the dealer asking if I saw a tool in the engine bay, sure enough, there it was. No damage, but I did have to drive back to give it back to them. It was a black and decker, looked good. I should've kept it. :naughty:
