Missing Screw Factory Roof Rack

Hey all,

I am missing this piece from the factory cross bars, that seems to tighten the bars. Any help as to what it is called and where I can get another one would be great help.

Ugh, I went through this with the other screw in your pic - the one that secures the cross bar into the side rail. Basically according to the Toyota parts guys I talked to at two different dealerships you can only get those screws as part of the TE crossbar package which is over $100. They were not able to find individual part numbers for any of the other TE roof rack parts. Maybe this has changed since the summer when I was looking.

Two things you might try - see if a service advisor will warranty it for you (say it came out while you were driving) or see if you can get one from someone who has gone with an aftermarket rack.

Option 3-

Looking at the pictures, they appear to be standard threads. They sell screws with plastic handles molded onto the top at places like Home Depot. Better quality pieces like that at marine supply stores. I'm sure you can find one that fits. If the threads are too long, thread a nut all the way onto the screw, cut the threads to length with a Dremel, and take the nut off. Doing it this way will repair any damaged threads from the cut and help avoid cross-threading.

Cheaper than $100 for sure. Start with a 1/4-20 bolt- looks about right...

I tried the warranty route, but since I added the Yakima ontop, they wont budge...Needless to say, I left there in a ticked off mood. Thanks for the input though.

I didnt even think of Home Depot. I will take the other bolt off and pass by there this weekend to see if I can match it.

Ha! Wouldn't that be something? Check out West Marine too- their stuff will cost alot more, but marine stuff lasts out in the weather!

1/4-20????? Antman!! Maybe on your US made Gobi rack.

For the factory racks ....chances are it will be a M5 or M6 bolt size since every factory bolt I've seen or taken apart on the 4Runner is Metric. The ones going down into the roof are M8's and then of course the the second number will be length in mm's, like a M8-25 par exemple.

Putting a US standard bolt in a metric nut might sometimes work but will usually strip the threads since the thread pitch is different.
Just take the one from the opposite side and use a caliper to measure the diameter or take it to Home Depot or a hardware store to match it up by eye.

OK, so I went to Home Depot today. I asked a couple of associates what they think would work best, and well, they were "ass"ociates about it, today for some reason.
I took it upon myself to go through the 24 million types of bolts they have.

So, for the moment everybody (especially Gary & Jeff) has been waiting for:

DRUMROLL PLEASE.....

The size that best fit my missing screw is.............

1/4"

Just to be fair, I did not check for the "metric equivalent". I got what I wanted and rushed out of there. It doesn't look good at all, but will do for now.

Honestly I would consider Gary's info on the metric size and try to find it, esp since it's something you will be screwing in / out.

As for the metric size, I have to try and get a better looking, better form fitting bolt. The piece will do now, but I cant see myself leaving it on there for more than a coulpe of weeks

Here's a pic of the bolts from my Limited crossbars. They seem to be different. The Trail seems to have an quick adjustable knobs. The Trail knobs may be similar to the adjustable knobs seen on the sides of the LTDs crossbars.

Yes, my knobs are different. They are "quick adjustable". And yes, they are similar to the LE quick adjustable knobs on the cross bars. At least they look the same. Probably same size also.

I prefer to get the OEM knob than any aftermarket screw or bolt. If anybody is willing to part out their discarded stock rack, I will gladly pay for the knob and the shipping.

I do not want to go to the dealer and 'borrow' one from their lot.

Reviving an extremely old thread (like three Olympics ago). But thought someone might find this useful. I was missing the bolts too, and I think the stock ones are large, flat plastic knobs with a threaded stud. I couldn't find anything like that that was the correct thread size and pitch, which is M6-1.00. So I bought a couple of black, socket head screws. They fit perfect and just stick up a little, probably the same as the stock plastic knobs.
