mizak82 build thread

Took off the step tubes.

Much easier to get out of the car without them. Felt like I was rolling off my seat. Especially in parking lots where you can't always fully open your door.
however it makes me want the stainless steel door sills.. opening the door looking at that plastic door sill is a bit of a let down now..

Going to get the tires rebalanced. Has the weights on the outside. Once that's fixed Ill spray the wheels gunmetal.

I have not yet decide whether it will be flat. Satin. Or gloss gunmetal.

Any suggestions?

Ordered the plastidip. Went with mettalic anthercite grey.

Sprayed the center caps. Had my tires rebalanced with the weights on the inside. Hopefully I can pull the wheels over the weekend. I realize people using 1 can a tire are not really doing the whole wheel. Just the faces. These wheels are trashed so I was trying to clean them up completely. So I purchased two more cans of gunmetal to spray the back of the rims. Hoping that's enough.

Also purchased a can of chassis flat black. So when i pull the wheels I an clean up the wheel wells too.

Was told I need rear pads. So I figure I should just put news pads in when I pull the wheel.

Looks like I got a pretty good list with this little project.

Plastidippped the wheels. Kind of wish they were limited 18s. But I'm really happy how it came out. The wheels were trashed and came out looking brand new.

Lot of work being I live in a second floor condo. No power tools. Replaced the rear brake pads (akibonos) at the same time. Little grinding sound at low speeds. I didn't replace the rotors... I just recently put the spacers on, red loctite, no power tools.. I didn't want to deal with it.. but I think fresh pads and a good cleaning is an upgrade to doing nothing...

also Sprayed brake cleaner like a moron after i heard the squealing on the first drive.. Kind of went away. But ate into the paint on the inside rim. Had to touch up. So took me all of 5 mins to **** up a wheel. Lol.

and some before and after pics of the wheels.. they were poop.. but came out great.. Apologize for the nexens.. they were on the runner when i bought it and they still have life..

truck looks great. Interesting how similar it is to mine. I got a silver 2006 2WD Sport bought it with 79.5k miles in Orlando. Same wheels and everything. Gotta do a bit of the maintenance you've done. The wheels look good plastidipped too.

Quick update..

- I did the rear diff breather mod.. cost was all of 30 bucks in parts.. came out well.. little hiccup.. I recommend if anyone does it, to feed the hose down from the gas cap spot to start, instead of running it up at the end...

I live in florida the rainy season is starting, so I figured if any off road/on road mod for me to do would be this.. In case of flooding

- I sprayed the mud flaps satin black.. kept putting on tire shine but they were so faded it wouldn't last... Now I don have to worry about them..

- wrapped interior door handles carbon fiber 4d to match the center console. Best 7 bucks I ever spent.

- A reverse sensor unit was installed before I purchased the vehicle. The sensor were black and in the bumper. Kind of smoking being that I debadged the whole car and I like a clean look. So I got some factory match silver paint. Sprayed and cleared.

- I did the VSC OFF mod with OEM switch modded to constant on when its pushed in.. Seemed to be unanimous that this was an important thing to do, and really the only difference to the 08/09 4runners.. So i wanted that option.. and for about 50 bucks it was worth it, even if I never use it..

-took the wheel off and re greased the brake pads and sprayed the calipers with brake cleaner.. Really quieted it down..

- I ordered a set of stainless steel door sills!!! pretty excited.. one of the features of the Lexus RX300 that i miss.. I think the plastic stock sills look very cheap..

still getting shitty gas mileage for a V6.. 16.5 per gallon last fill up.. I feel like I'm getting robbed 2 mpg, but people on the site seem to think that is normal.. idk

Blacked out the headlights. Took a little longer than expected. Ran into a few hiccups. One removed the orange reflector. But one shattered and it was a pain in the ass being that the glue them. It looked beat up so I sprayed that little piece black after I cleaned it up with the dremel. Two the piece the blinker/DRL hangs out in burned the plastic surround. So I sanded and filled the damage. Also sprayed that piece metallic grey. Which I wanted the whole housing that color instead of black. But black goes better with the grey car. I will do a headlight restore in the outside soon and they will be basically perfect.

dammit..

had to redo the lights... my day time running lights/blinker burnt the plastic casing again... and one bulb went bad, went to replace it and couldn't get it out of the housing..

every time..

well this time i sprayed them flat black, added blue accessory bulbs and did the day time running light delete.. kind of a pain in the ass to get to the relay, but a simple cut of the wire and no more day time running lights!

I decided to upgrade my in dash cd changer.. thought it was a JBL but it says pioneer on the back? idk..

I just purchased a Jensen VX7022 touch screen.. it has navigation, CD/DVD, bluetooth, mirrors iPhones.. its pretty loaded, and not that expensive compared to alpine or pioneer.. Just such a big jump in price for all the same features.. should arrive this week

I purchased a steering wheel control adapter so i don't lose that, and still trying to pick out a reverse camera..

I will post as the install starts..

The Total cost was 325 all in..

Jensen VX7022 headunit: 240.00 amazon
SWC 45 eBay
Wiring Harness/mount 25 eBay
camera 15 eBay

hoping to sell my stock radio for a few bucks and offset the cost..

for what this does I couldn't justify an extra 400 or so for an Alpine or Pioneer.. Its a stock unit on a lot of vehicle manufacturers.. SO we will see but I thought it was a steal..

No amp so I didn't need the AV inputs..

Side by side comparison, new unit is a little slimmer but the mount made it almost exact..

We are up and running.

- I'm still waiting on my back up camera, ordered from china apparently, so it should be here in a couple weeks.. then I will take this apart again to wire it..

- I placed the GPS Antenna inside the dash on the metal bar between the Head unit and the glove box.. hopefully going to get a signal.. However I can't test it yet, because I haven't been able to download the maps (needs windows, wtf!) so need to borrow the girlfriends computer to solve that..

- Ran the wires for the SWC, it didn't auto detect it, so Im going to trouble shoot to get that up and running hopefully.. or i got to take apart and solder instead of crimp when I do the rear camera.. But Im pretty sure i did it right..

- Bluetooth microphone, I ran behind the instrument cluster, up the pillar, and across to my above my rearview mirror, out of sight..

- Bluetooth, CD, DVD working as they should.. I ran a HDMI cord towards my center console, have not decided on where to run it up through, possibly ashtray or inside center console.. I don't know what to use it for i guess mirror screen my cell phone?

- mount kit looks pretty seamless and OEM, didn't buy the 09 tom tom trim piece, because this is surprisingly flush I'd say..

- I will now need to change the lighting in my interior to LED's to match.. thinking white or blue..

Ok guys. Wow what a PIA. I put in my back up camera. Wire wasn't long enough. Ran it from the front. Then started over and ran it from the back. Lots of soldering. Extended the wires. Popped off so many panels my thumbs are killing me. Lol.

Troubleshot the swc. All I had to do was hit the reset button and it auto detected. Works flawless now.

Navigation. Not too thrilled about that so far and haven't used it once. Go to download the update, have to have Windows. Of course. Then it has to be transferred usb to usb and they don't give you the wire. HDMI won't work to update. Got to staples don't have it. Go to radio shack. They want 35 dollars. Lol. I'll order one from eBay for 3 then I can update it. The good news is the Gps antenna is now working stuck to the metal rod inside my dash. Which is tits bc I don't want it seen and don't have to run it outside the vehicle.

I'll have to take it apart one more time to add my hdmi/apple AV cord when it shows up. That will allow me to mirror my phone.

I got to say this headunit is impressive. Minus the install hiccups.

Only issue currently is my back up camera works when in reverse. But doesn't automatically go to the screen when I go in reverse, I have to hit camera on the monitor is that a mess up on me or common? My girlfriend camera as soon as she is in reverse the camera pops up.
