There has been a lot of talk about the OEM Bi LED headlights and Morimoto’s XB v2 drop in full replacements. I’ve been running HID bulbs in the OEM halogen projector housings for years and never was happy with how they worked. So I was initially excited about both options but was really disappointed with the output of those two solutions. After hearing great things about the MLED 2.0 projectors, specifically that it was one of the first projectors to match high end HID projector performance I decided a headlight retrofit was in order.
Probably the most labor intensive part of all of this was actually opening up the headlights. Toyota uses permaseal to bond the headlight components together and as the name implies it’s not meant to be opened. I spent easily three hours on each headlight just cracking them open.
Once they were open it was a pretty straightforward swap of the projectors using Quick retrofit brackets from [MENTION=81410]LightWerkz[/MENTION]. The technology behind these things is super impressive.
Once I had them installed on one headlight I wanted to compare the output of my existing setup vs. the new BI LED projector
As you can see there is no comparison in terms of even light distribution. After buttoning things up I went for a drive and was blown away by the output
Low Beam
High Beam (MLED High + Stock Halogen High Beams)
Hands down one of those mods that really made a huge difference. I also have the high beams wired so that I use both the projector and original OEM halogen reflector setup when activated. It gives my 30” Baja Designs S8 a run for the money
So my overall take on this is that it is worth a weekend and $400 in parts to make your driving experience at night that much better. My only complaint and it’s a pretty big one is that they used an LED that is pretty cool in color 6300K. I think the performance would be even better if they had something like a 5000K LED in there. Hopefully there will be an MLED 3.0 with an option like that.
