Moab in March

As far as wheeling with w/Jeremiah (Dirtco) goes, just look at it as a learning opportunity. He and I ran Fins & Things together last year, and watching him drive actually did help me to pick better lines.

Well said Nick, it's all about getting out and having fun! I'm the "little guy" when I get around some of my friends but I still go out and have a great time, sometimes I struggle following them around but it's still fun.

You don't need a super built rig to have a a good time in Moab, it's one of the few places where a built to the hilt rock buggy can have just as much fun as a stock Rubicon, all on the same trail. I think most of the rigs on this trip (including mine, if I can make it) will be pretty close in terms of how built, and capable they are.

March is still a ways off but I would love to come if I can get the time. The only problem I may run into is it falls over my wife's birthday and while she love to wheel Im not sure she will want to be in Moab on her birthday. But, she does love to drive hells revenge there so we will see. LOL

35s, beadlocks, dual locked, full float, supercharged..... :flipoff:. I hope you can make it, its always good to wheel with somebody who knows what they're doing. Helps the rest of us learn without leaving pieces of tailight everywhere .

So I have been talking to Tyler and to the group that I went with last year (2 Jeeps). Our tentative plans are to camp at Upper Onion Creek the nights of the 15th to the 18th, and leave the 19th. The group coming from Fort Collins will include myself, Tyler, his roommate, and 2 Jeep buddies. There is also potential for another lifted 4runner and a stock tacoma (he will park when necessary), but they are not fully committed at this point.

We are all college kids and most will have passengers (i.e. girlfriends) riding along (I will have my dog too, he is super friendly with people/other dogs but might try to eat your food if you don't pay attention!). So if anyone wants to camp with us those nights, you are welcome but I can't promise a quiet nighttime atmosphere, it is our spring break after all. That being said, we aren't crazy frat-bro status, but who doesn't like beer around the campfire in the desert?

I know myself and the 2 Jeeps I am coming with will need to mix a hike or two into our plans to keep the passengers happy. So I guess if you guys are trying to do a wheeling trip only maybe it is best if I butt out of the plan-making on here. I'd love to hit some trails with you dudes, so I think I'll just say what our plans are, and if you guys want to hang out with us the whole time that is fine, or if we just run one trail together and don't see each other the rest of the time that's fine too. It's a vacation and I want everyone to get what they want out of the trip.

We are probably driving out the night of the 15th and getting to the campsite late (like after midnight). We want to run Trifecta (golden spike, gold bar rim, poison spider) on the 17th. Then Hell's Revenge on either the 16th or the 18th, not sure yet. So we should have time for one more trail before leaving on the 19th, maybe 2 if we leave late the 19th. I have tossed around Steel Bender, Metal Masher and Wipe-Out Hill, as they are all rated at 5 on the low-end on Trail Damage. Moab Rim looks cool, but would be about the limit as far as difficulty (trail rated 6-7).

So at least there is some more information out now. I definitely hope you guys can make a trail run or two with us. Let me know what you guys think about trails in addition to Hell's Revenge and the Trifecta. I can also give specs on the other vehicles if you guys are curious. :beer:

Sounds like a blast but alas Moab will have to be a trip for another year for myself and the wife.

Our first child is due in June and I need to keep all my accrued vacation time for then. Plus I don't think it would be advisable for the wife to be banging around on the rocks...

Maybe 2015 but for this trip i would be out.

To make a very long story short; I switched jobs and can't take vacation during those dates, I don't have the accrued time or seniority to even try it. Luckily we have a shut down period this Spring, so I might still be able to make it out to Moab. But, it's not until April or May.

I heard you can do Trifecta in a day without too much trouble? Maybe I'm wrong. But if we have to pick two I think you got the right ones.

Three of us (3 vehicles) ran it a few years back in about 7 hours, which included a stop for lunch and another stop to change a flat on one of the vehicles. The larger the group the longer it's going to take. I also did it with a large group at Cruise Moab year before last and we finished in a little under 10 hours, which is pretty speedy for a group as large as ours was. Another variable is how many photo stops you make.

I camped at Onion Creek last year on spring break when I went, it was a bit out of the way but I like the spot and there wasn't anyone else out there, so that's why I picked it again. I already reserved the site for the people from CO (18 people, 7 vehicles on our end).

The plan right now is for the majority of us to drive through the night on 3/15, get there after midnight, set up camp and get to sleep. Wake up a bit later Sunday and run Hell's Revenge. Then Monday we want to run at least part of the Trifecta (Poison Spider, Golden Spike, then Gold Bar Rim if we have time).

Tuesday will probably be more of an exploratory day running easy trails where we can get out of the vehicles and explore, and then maybe do a short hike in the afternoon (like Mill Creek). Wednesday we have to be out of the campsite by noon, so pack up and then maybe run Top of the World or something similar in time/difficulty before the drive back to CO. We also want to do a night run so we talked about Seven Mile Rim for that.

Vehicles coming are (3) 3rd gens, (1) Xterra, (1) TJ, (1) XJ and a stock Taco (he won't be running Trifecta obviously, but I think he could get away with only some scraped bumpers on Hell's Revenge). It's dominantly a wheeling trip, but there are plenty of passengers so we want to make sure we don't coop them up in the back seats the whole time. It will be interesting trying to get so many people up and moving early, but I think it should be okay.

unfortunately Im out. the wife is turning 30 and probably any other birthday she would be in but we will be mourning the loss of her 20's somewhere other than on the trail. LOL It stinks to because my dual cases and winch will be in by then. Have fun and take a lot of pictures.
