mobil 1 synthetic vs toyota OEM oil

Anyone else notice that these engines are louder with anything other than Toyota oil? They're noisy no matter what but with Valvoline 0-20 and Mobil 1 0-20 they are even louder. I will be switching back to Toyota oil at my next oil change. Whoever makes it, makes it to Toyota spec and there does seem to be a difference. BTW I use nothing but OEM filters so the filter has nothing to do with it in this case.

I ran mobil1 for a while, then got some penzoil high mileage on sale. Engine was noticeably more quiet on the pennzoil. I then switched back to mobil1 and have been running it for last few OCI. I'm tempted to try the pennzoil again or the toyota oil again to see if i notice a difference after being used to running mobil1 for a while.

Mobil 1 0W-20 and Wix oil filter since day one. 36,000 miles currently and the engine has zero problems.

Well one would hope. That engine is barely even broken in. Report back when you have 10x that many miles.

Seriosly..its a Toyota. Use either an change it regularly and it'll go forever. The 3.slow in my 2nd gen has 330k miles on it trouble free aside from warrantied head gaskets at 40k miles.

On my last oil change I used Mobil1 0-20 vs my normal Amsoil. I have noticed the tick since switching. I have 64K on Runner now. I am switching back to Amsoil @ 65K. Not pitching Amsoil just my .02 worth.

Just to be different, I run Kendall GT-1 0w-20 and have since the begining (80+ k miles now). Petroleum Services company delivers 12 quarts to my door for about $65. Not the cheapest, but not outrageous either.

By a chemical content standpoint, Toyota oil has a slight increase in Phosphorus and Zinc which are wear additives over the moly used in Mo1 for wear. While it ''cushions'' and quiets it is a little harder on plugs and cats when the ring wear allows more oil burnoff.

Walmart is selling 0W-20. I'd bet a buck it's as good as most any other.

I wouldn't run that super tech crap in anything but a lawnmower if even that. I agree that most oils will do the job just fine and the most important thing is changing oil when it's due and most people without a doubt way overthink their oil choice but at least stick with a mainstream brand.

It is likely a Warren Product, and a quality base stock. The lack of a better Add Package is why I wouldn't run it.......especially if you go over 7500 between changes!

It's the same. Toyota OEM oil is made by Mobil.

My local dealer told me the same thing. Toyota oil is Mobil 1.

I was actually told the same thing by my Mobil rep at work BUT it's not Mobil 1 It's a completely different formula made specifically for Toyota to their spec.

No one seemed to mention that there are quite a few Mobil 1 proucts these days in 0W-20 weight. 7 when I use their oil selection website. Even the TGMO formula was changed since it’s intro. I used it when I could find it at a reasonable price. Now I’ve been perfectly happy with M1 Extended Performance.

First oil change at 2K miles with Toyota oil, 2nd at 5K miles was Toyota oil, 3rd at 10K miles was M1 Advanced Fuel economy and I thought the engine got louder but thought it was all in my head. 15K mile change is Valvoline SYNpower and I again feel like it got even louder. Issue is, I only put about 7500 miles a year on my 4Runner so these oil changes are done at different times of the year in different temperatures. When I change it at 20K I will be going back to Toyota oil and we'll see what happens. That'll be my own little test to see how quiet or noisy it is. Again though that'll be around August when the oil is thinner at start up so who knows.

Just wondering if your local dealer, or mine hear in BC Canada might be able to cheap out?

Or would they have to buy the quality Toyota spec/mobil 1 oil discussed here?

I switched to m1 at around 140k, and do 3k-5k OCI's. I can definately say that the one time I ran pennzoil it was much quieter than the m1. I was at the dealer yesterday and was quoted 6.42/qt for the toyota oil. I will be changing it this weekend and will update on noise. I may do a before and after video to capture the sound. I've been using the M1 high mileage EP. I'm at 167k now. I switched to m1 because after 140k of dealer changes I was developing sludge, and they never greased ANY of the zerk fittings. I did have a couple of OCI's past 10k, which may have helped the sludge develop. I also have other theories, but they are just that. That is why i do 3-5k changes now. Forthose of you using the dealer, check your zerks. Mine still had factory black coating on them at 140k! No grease would go in until I cleaned it off!

I don't know how things work in Canada. In the U. S. - car dealers buy oil in bulk. In many cases, they use ONE oil. That could be 5W-30; 5W-20, who knows. Whatever the dealer wants to use. Every car gets that ONE weight of oil whether it's what's called for or not.

People on another Toyota forum went "oh no no no...my dealer would not do that". A few techs chimed in and that was the end of that.

The only way you will ever get what you want for any vehicle you own is to supply the parts yourself and roll up your sleeves.

if you actually have sludge (which totally sucks btw) you may be better off using the Pennzoil Platinum (or Ultra Platinum) as its chemistry purportedly cleans internals better than other oils.
