mobil 1 synthetic vs toyota OEM oil

Planning to do my 1st oil change soon. Any difference using Mobil 1 synthetic vs. OEM toyota 0-20 oil?

I believe most synthetics are similar. Any differences are probably just splitting of hairs.

The reason I say this is that I've owned quite a few Toyotas over the past 37 years, and have driven somewhere around 1.3 million miles in them. I've bought used ones and new ones (mostly used).

I used conventional oils until my 1988 4Runner, where I converted to Mobil 1 at around 100k miles. That Runner received 305,000 miles, and several other cars went well over 200k. With all those miles and engine types, I only had one engine that ever experienced a noticeable increase in oil consumption. That was a 2002 Chevy Prizm (i.e. Toyota Corolla 1.8 engine), and that engine had a design flaw that resulted in rings wearing prematurely (past 150k miles).

So for the next 300,000 miles, I bet you don't see any problems related to your choice of oil if you're using a good synthetic.

if you actually have sludge (which totally sucks btw) you may be better off using the Pennzoil Platinum (or Ultra Platinum) as its chemistry purportedly cleans internals better than other oils.

I have read that somewhere as well, along with a bunch of other ideas like running ATF, SeaFoam, Rotella, etc. For me, engine runs great, filter comes out fairly clean at my 3-5k changes, and oil doesn't look bad. Havent pulled the valve covers or the oil pan, but did pull the OCV screens out and they had some sludge on them. cleaned them up and has been running good since.

I may give the Pennzoil another shot if I can find the Ultra for a decent price. They all have claims of this and that, but hard to verify any of it. thats why i just do short OCI's.

Sludge is generally from going too long before changing your oil. Yeah I know Toyota says run it for 10K but that's BS IMO The same rep that told me the Toyota oil is made by Mobil also told me DO NOT run it for 10k, it will not hold up and is not designed for it by any means. No matter what oil I use, I will not go past 5K miles on it.

I'm quite certain that original conventional Toyota oil was just Mobil 5000. So not totally incorrect. OEM synthetic may be a Mobil product made specifically for Toyota.

Regardless, oil is oil^1000.

From what I was told, they do make it but to Toyota spec. It does not match any other oil they sell over the counter and is Toyota specific. Who knows, I just know the M1 definitely made my engine louder. We'll see what happens when I go back to Toyota Mobil lol

Oh, no doubt. It's just that any name brand oil of the proper spec has never been a consistent cause of death in 4Runners. There's likely a 5th gen with 300k out there that hasn't been using OEM oil. Might even be making slightly more ticking as a result.

Have to agree. Don't get me wrong, I love to split hairs as much as the next guy. But just to throw it out there, my mom's 2004 4runner spent most of it's 260k+ miles on a horse ranch. And she got her oil changes done whenever she would remember, sometimes 5k, sometimes 20k. And sometimes at a dealership, sometimes at Jiffy Lube. So who knows what oil was put in. Most importantly that thing still runs like a Toyota.

I agree and most of us are way over thinking the oil we choose. IMO though if a specific oil quiets the engine down, that's the oil that I will use in my engine. I have to assume that a quieter engine is a more well lubricated engine.

Not when the engine sounds exactly the same with fresh oil as it sounds after 5000 miles. If your engine sounds louder between oil changed, you're running your oil WAY too long.

I've used Mobil 1 products exclusively in all my vehicles since 1988 and have never has an engine related failure on vehicles with up to to 275K miles. The oil is probably good for up to 20K miles between changes, but I usually change at 5K to 10K miles.

The Toyota oil filter cartridge may be the weak link for my 4Runner . I don't have a feel for how it might compare with a premium spin on oil filter, but my sense is it isn't as good.

Mobil 1 is frequently on sale at Costco and easily available.

174K miles on a 2014 SR5. Using Mobil 1 synthetic changed every 10K miles. Using Mobil 75w90 Synthetic in the differentials. Used the Delvac Synthetic 75w90 in the transfer case. Those of you with Toyota OEM OCD must be pleasant people to be around. ound::

I haven't tried those oils. I'm looking at alternatives to Toyota oil, specifically Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Full Synthetic which appear to be excellent choices. Pennzoil offers a 15-point engine wear warranty. It would be a pain to keep records for 15 years or 500,000 miles. I plan to try the High Mileage on my next oil change because it has conditioners for engine seals. Here are highlights of the engine wear warranty.

Coverage up to 15 years or 500,000 miles (whichever is first) – if you exclusively use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Wrong weight but yeah I have read a lot of good reviews on their products in general. I use their grease for my u joints and slip yoke.

Yeah quickly copied and pasted the above, didn't recognize that lol, thanks. I'm tempted to try it out. Everyone mentions how quiet their engine runs when using it. And 10k is not out of the question either. I might pair it with the mobil 1 extended filter next time.

10k is out of the question for me period. I will never go 10k on any oil, just not comfortable with it. 5k is all I ever go.

I used Motul in the past but 0w40 in a BMW in-line 6. Met the LL01 spec. Worked fine, engine was silky smooth. Car had 150k miles when I parted with it.

I switched from mobile 1 to Mag1 (amazon) in my 1st gen Tacoma with 310K miles. Im not a technical person but I felt no change in performance. The only change I found was the cost of oil.
