mobil1 supersync'ed

today is the 1st time i'd the 05 runner v6 filled with synthetic oil - mobile1. costed nearly $60 out of the door with 10% off toyota coupon. is that a fair price? hope it's worth it. on the plus side, i get a $10 dunkin'donuts gift cert from toyota. this is the coupon from mail, for registered toyota owners, i am guessing. must be a regional thing what perk comes along.

i never figure out this stealership service dept - years ago they were horrible. last year or two it aint too bad - when i replaced timing belt on a '97 camry, they suggested to NOT replace the water pump as according to the tech, it's still good. and today when i wanted the tires on the runner also rotated (never rotated for 14k miles), they said no need as it showed even wear.

the reason i went for the synthetic is, in addition to the valued recommendation from many here, the regular dino oil always checked out dark brown not too long after an oil change - making me wonder if they really did the work.

we'll see how mobile1 fares in a month or two.

you could've probably spent half that if you did it yourself. for a place to do synthetic though, thats roughly about how much i've seen many places do it for, give or take a few bucks.

The dino oil gets dark because of the additives in the oil doing their job to protect your engine. It is normal and nothing to worry about. I saw mobile 1 for $3.50 a quart, if the V8 uses 6.5 quarts, and a filter costs $8.00 at the dealer parts dept, I would say you got hosed.

Unless your operating your vehicle in extreme heat or cold, I would say your using a oil that is way better then your engine needs, and a complete waste of money considering the API rating SM of current motor oil, which is above your requirments any ways.

Since the vehicle never specified synthetic oil, if you want to pay the extra money go right ahead. If it is your hope to achieve 200,000 miles then the synthetic may help you to reach that goal, however many people have done that using dino oil with a much lower API rating.

i agree with most you said. there'd to be a reason many diehards in this board use synthetic and i got to try it, at least once.

mine is a V6 SR5. the price breakdown is 6qt x $7/qt = $42 for mobile1, around $6 for the filter, about $13 for labor, then factoring the misc disposal and 5% tax. compared to the price i would have paid in costco for a case (6x1qt) of mobile1, yes i got hosed. wife doesnt like the idea of me getting under the truck and i would need to acquire a set of the jack and stand. any other tool i need for this job - i think someone said a special tool to remove a cover on skid plate to be able to drain?

In a month or two your oil will be dark whether you use synthetic or dino, just to let you know if you think it will be clear like when it went in you are wrong.

I don't run full synthetic in my 4runner but I do run Mobil 1 full synthetic in my Mr2 Spyder and I just changed it on Sun. ( we had 60 degree weather in PA).

5 Qts Mobil 1 $26.00
Toyota Oil filter $4.50
Labor doing it myself Free
1LB Dunkin Dounuts coffee $7.99
Total $38.49

Satisfaction that I did it and it was done right........priceless

next time save yourself $21.59........:D

I didn't need to use jack stands to change my oil.
What you are being charged for a syn oil change is absolutely rediculous.
You should really learn to DIY, it's really not very hard at all.
Once you see how easy it is you begin to try to do other maint. items yourself. You can save big $$$.
Of course, you have to have the time, and that's hard to come by at times.

and the 4g V6 4R is SUPER easy to change the oil since the oil filter filter is right on top!

1 5qt of Mobil 1 @walmart $19.98
1 qt of Mobil 1 @walmart $4.79
1 OEM filter @stealer $5.80

total cost DIY about $35 and KNOWING that it pure synthetic Mobil 1 oil and not some shitty regular oil the stealer put in is priceless!:D

Spoken like someone that has never had an oil-related failure...

Oil is cheap. Even synthetic oil is cheap. I plan on using M1 full synthetic on a 3000 mile serice interval on our 4 runner because I know it is good oil and like I said, $30 compared to $10 is nothing to me, especially seeing as how it will be like once every 3 months.

After I blew the second engine in my '95 I realized maybe there is something to this oil stuff after all. Not only are replacement engines expensive, they cut out on you at the worst of times and the replacements are never of the same quality unless you drop $8k for an oem.

Do yourself a favor if you plan on keeping your truck. Use good oil and change it often.

Btw, the 5 quart jug at walmart is the way to go for Mobile 1.

One last thing though

Doing the oil changes your self means you must dispose of the oil and used filter. It means having a suitable container to put the waste oil in, putting it into you truck (without spilling it anywhere) and either taking it to a local recycling center or to an automotive parts store that accepts it. This in itself is why I have my regular oil changes ( every 5000 miles, $24) done by the dealer under warranty. When it runs out, I end up buying a case of oil and doing it myself, disposing of the oil once a year.

I have the dealer do mine until they stop giving out freebies... $55 to change the oil and lube everything, then they give me $10 Dunkin donuts gift card, plus $25 to a local restaraunt that I like anyway... Final cost for Mobil 1 change at the dealer: $20 (55-25-10) - I think I would pay that amount in disposal fees around here...

I have 2 local auto parts stores that take in old oil for free. Advance Auto and O'Rielys. Both stores even have paper towels in case you get your hands dirty. My guess is, a lot of auto part stores have this service.

I have a friend that works at an oil change place and I just take him my Mobile 1 syn and a M1 filter ands he changes mine on a slow day for a case of beer.
I run my oil and filter for 8000 miles which ends up being about once every 10 months so synthetic is the way to go for me and I like the extra protection synthetic offers when I'm off road.

Costco $24 for 6qts. Mobil 1

did they drop that price? last i bought, it was at $24, that was a few months ago. last i saw, it was $28. this was a few weeks ago. I think Walmart is cheaper with that price, ~$21 for the 5quart and say ~$5 for the one quart. A couple bucks difference I guess.

i don't need to jack the truck up to do the oil change. no need for a special tool either, a flathead screwdriver would work. but i found that i lost that cover when i changed my oil last.

I use Advanced Auto for oil. I take coolant, ATF, paint, other things to the county dump. There is a collection place there. Both are free.

Oil filters go in the trash, unless I'm going to the dump soon. They have a used filter bin there.

The extra protection when you are off road is all in your mind. The current dino oil has a API rating of SM, this is greater then the requirment your engine needs. Extending the oil changes with a synthetic is a myth, sure to cause failers in the years to come. If synthetic oil was so important to long life and reliability, don't you think the oil would be synthetic from the factory?

I owned 2 crappy american cars in my life, and they both saw 145,000 miles before I sold them. This was with cheap dino oil, and the API rating was no higher than SG, compared to todays rating of SM, goes to show you synthetics are the best thing to remove money from the pockets from people that buy into this false need that their engine needs synthetic oil to run better, stronger, faster.

Pat Goss who hosts many car shows even proved on a dyno that no increase in horsepower or torque was gained through the use of synthetic oil. After tearing apart two engines after 60,000 miles. One with dino oil, the other synthetic, there was no real difference between the two. It should also be noted that these engines did not require the use of synthetics.

Got any evidence of this claim?

So all engines delivered from the factory with dino oil are the same?

I'd like to see Pat take apart two 10.0:1 CR, variable valve, ULEV/LEV-II engines after 120k miles following Toyota's OCI, one with dino and the other synthetic.

Search "Toyota Sludge" on Google. Increased performance and reduced emissions are bad for oil.
