Mods for the 3.0?

I'm in the process of getting proto for my '04 Solara. I'm getting an intake with a MAF adjustment processor that leans out the mixture and a transmission shift kit from a shop in MD. When they found out I bought a T4R they were jazzed and asked if I'd trade cars when they're done with the Solara.

They wanted to know if there was a market for aftermarket mods for the 3.0 4Runners. They made these intakes for the Mazda 6s and got an average 16hp to the wheels. Nice! We'll see what they get on the 3.3l Solara. They make anything there's need for so if a community such as this cries out for a fix, they'll find a solution.

So what, if anything do you think we need? If they could offer more HP for the 3.slow, would you spend $$ to get more power? The added bonus is the better mileage too. A shift kit would be a bit silly on our trucks I guess. But they do intakes, headers, just about anything. I haven't seen any major performance upgrades mentioned in my searches but correct me if all this has been done.

The only dyno proven mod for the 3vze was a jacobs street ignition system. the system netted 8 or 10whp over NEW oem equipment at 3800rpm, where the dyno cut off. Higher up, the gains most likely would have been more.

Of course the usual exhaust and most people claim intake. My FIPK did help a lot, but it still uses the restrictive as hell VAFM found the 3vze's. (this vafm is THE SMALLEST vafm in toyota's vafm group - our 24v cousin, the 3vzfe got a large vafm)

to remedy this im working on a custom intake (100% DIY) using a different VAFM....outside of that im not saying ;)

Oh yeah and Split Second makes a MAF conversion system that WILL work with the 3vze...;)

Then there are other tricks that can be done - TB coolant bypass like the LS1 guys are doing.

Headers
Turbo - huge room here

Porting and polishing and oversized exhaust valves

Cams MATCHED to ported heads - probably the BIGGEST area that needs attention.

Forged internals....

All I can think of for now...
 
I'll compile whatever I get into a wishlist for the shop. Thanks for the input. (sounds like you know what you're talking about!)

BTW: From their past work I'm bettin' that they'd lose the VAFM and rig a MAF. They did it for another car and got big gains. I forget what model though. I'll bend an ear when I talk to them next.

I talked to them last night and they are focused on the MAF conversion project for now. If there's interest, they'll make that.

Here's the deal: It's not just an intake, it uses a MAF sensor instead of the VAFM (much more flow) to talk to the ECU about what kind of air you're getting. But in this application the MAF would talk to their "MAFci" chip that would talk to the ECU and lean out the mixture. It's a programmable chip so they can get the best HP at each RPM. Pretty slick. It also avoids throwing the check engine linght.

So... Who thinks they would want to add HP to their G2 4R? Pretty weak response thus far (84 views, 1 reply). Does that mean no one wants this to happen? Also if there's potential proto donors out there that would like to be the first (and free), the shop is in Beltsville, MD.

If you want crazy amounts of replys, make a post on www.yotatech.com About 1/2 the posters are 1st or 2nd gen owners. I'd love to do a proto MAF, but I'd need to drive up there wouldnt I? :(
 
Yup. Unless you have someone drive there for you... :cool: Should be about four weeks if you're far, 1-2 if you're close (so you can come back for the production fit.

FYI, we have a donor for cp-e and they are going to start development on a MAF conversion kit for the 3.0. axon of YotaTech is dropping the 4R off next month. We'll let you know if they find horses hiding in there. (they expect 20 - 30 wheel HP.)
 
this is very interesting - - I think it is pretty clear that breathing with the 3vze is the big problem - - I will watch closely - - along with the soon to be option of Thorley headers - - this might be a nice way to get some simple add on gains.

I have also heard of people using lighter flywheels due to the reduction in rotating mass, however easier to stall if you are playing too hard. Makes a large difference if you are running larger tires.
