I think that is a great idea. It just takes some time. You could even start a thread like this and they could probably make it sticky.

Or maybe something like the best thread on a particular topic.

Advantages:
1. Less threads on the same topic = less overall redundancy
2. Faster access to relevant information
3. People that already have posted in that thread will get an email saying there is a new post. As opposed to just happening upon it, because we are addicted to the forum.
4. Less searches needed.

I would be willing to help out on this effort. For instance, I created THIS THREAD to summarize the options we have for grill replacements and inserts. I added pictures of each option and links to where I found them. It would be nice if someone could easily find this thread as opposed to browsing through lots of search results. Plus, since it would be easier to find, people would be more likely to add onto this thread as opposed to creating a new one that will yield more search results/redundancy to sort through.

Maybe the main outline thread could be titled something like "Check Here Before Starting a New Thread".

Maybe everyone could start posting a list of threads that should be included.

It could even be in outline style where there are many subheadings of other relevant threads. Non-working example:

NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
  • Installation
  • Backup Camera
  • Voice Navigation
  • Audio Upgrades

I try to keep elaborate favorites folders to try to keep track, but it is pretty tough. I have resigned to just sorting the threads I post in. It would be really nice to have something like this. These categories could also be broken down by generation of 4runner and other typical levels like Electronics, Exterior, Interior, Performance.

Sorry Biff if this is not what you had in mind. I just had been thinking about this for a while and decided to babble on about it here.

Sounds good. I think we have talked about some Tech-write ups before. Yotatech has some good write ups and I have used their reports to help people out. I will pass along your request and we will get back with you. This would be really great for the 4th generation model, since we have a lot of those & not much has been written up about them.

Thats exactly what I meant, check out the link to the Landcruiser forum I posted. All it is is several links to either writeups or answers to FAQ. Your grill replacement thread can go in there, everybody always asks about lift kits and will they go on XREAS equiped rigs. Something simple people can always see when they log on.

Yes, the question about lift kits and XREAS is a perfect example of a FAQ. Maybe it could look a little something like this:

LIFTED
  • Revtek
  • JDM
  • FAQ: Is there a lift kit compatible with XREAS?
LOWERED

The FAQs could jump directly to answers to the questions or at least the page of the answer.

I noticed in the link you provided, the thread was closed. My opinion is that the thread should be open for easy suggested additions or changes.

Ultimately, I think it would be best if someone could create/append a thread to become a good summary thread before addition to this list......but that takes a lot of time.....so someone could just take a good starting crack at it and then it could be a living document that is constantly evolving.

It would be useful to have somewhere that brought together all of the discussions on various rims and tires I think. Given the time of year something specifically on winter tires would be useful.

I totally agree. Just in the last couple weeks alone, there have been many many threads all going on about new rims and tires. Maybe you or someone else could create a summary thread similar to the thread I created for the Grills. I think it would be best to at least seperate it into two seperate threads, rims and tires.

Question: If two threads are merged, are links to the individual threads diverted to the new merged thread? Or do you get an error?

Just adding one good thread on rims and tires would be good. Same thing for something like "Whats the biggest tire I can put on my runner with stock suspension" in this case it would be up to GatorGreg to select the thread or writeup post.

Keeping it as simple as possible would be crucial.

New Thread Beginning

Biff, if GatorGreg should be responsible for which threads to add, I bet he would appreciate some suggested threads to add. I think something like this would be useful. Do you think it is too complicated? I started linking threads that I am most familiar with and feel are the best on the topic. If anyone disagrees, definitely correct me or append.

Title Ideas:
  • Check Here Before Starting a New Thread
  • 4th Gen Mods List
  • 4th Gen Reference
  • 4th Gen Technical Write-ups
First post beginning text ideas:
  • These threads are a good starting point for your discussion of particular topics.
  • This Threads Goals:
-To provide a useful reference for everyone to use
-To reduce the number of redundant questions and threads on T4R.ORG
-To reduce the need for complex searches and subsequent hunting through the hits.
-To reduce the need to add favortives/bookmarks
  • Please also utilize the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) thread.
Second post text ideas:
  • Your input is vital to the success of this list:
  • Do you have any threads that should be added to this list? As the suggestions come pouring in (hopefully), I'll edit this first post to incorporate your suggestions.
  • Summary threads make this list much more helpful and are great addtions to the forum. If you create one, please post it hear for addition. For example, if there are a ton of different threads discussing one topic, create a summary thread of those individual threads. I hate to use one I created as an example, but it is the only one I can think of right now, Grills.
  • Do you think this thread should be sticky?

EXTERIOR PARTS
NAVIGATION
LIGHTING
WHEELS & TIRES
  • FAQ: Whats the biggest tire I can put on my runner with stock suspension?
  • Rim Options
  • Tire Options
SUSPENSION
  • FAQ: Is there a lift kit compatible with XREAS?
  • Lifting
  • Lowering

Re: New Thread Beginning

I like it, braking up into sections like you did is better I think.

I've PM'd GG with a few threads like:

* How can I add a lift to an XREAS equipped runner

* Whats the biggest tire I can add with my stock suspension

* Cheap mods you can do to your rides

* Grill replacements for your 4th Gen (Luxurys thread is perfect)

* The latest TSB out for the 4runner(ie Sulfar smell, Seat Rattle)

* Is a Superchager really worth it

* How to do an oil change

* How to rotate your tires

* How to change and bleed your brakes

and many more

The stuff he has on his above stated post is okay, but not very useful mostly general info. You need stuff you can use like the grill thread, or a lift thread.

Agreed. I just added the rest of that because I thought it would be better than nothing. Then, if someone was motivated enough to create a tech writeup or summary thread it would replace all the "general info."

Is basically what you want to say is 'KISS'?

Luxury and Biff, I've taken the stuff you PM'd me and the stuff posted above and so far I've added what you see below to the 4Runner 101 thread, if you've got additional titles (with links) or organizational suggestions please post them here and I'll try to work them in.

OFF-ROADING MODS
ENGINE / MAINTENANCE
INTERIOR PARTS
EXTERIOR PARTS
NAVIGATION
LIGHTING

New Title

How about changing the title from 4runner 101 to
FAQ for 4runners.

Also making it a sticky like we discussed, so it comes out on top of the screen everytime we come on the forum.

Also, I'd suggest keeping it as simple as possible. Keep the list of threads as general as possible, (ie BRAKES, LIFTS, TIRES) anything more detail will make the list look to clutter.

I think it is sticky in the General Discussion forum. Do you mean on the main homepage? I think that is a pretty good idea once it gets a little more established. Even at this point I think it should also be in the Accessories forum.

Simplicity is definitely best. Especially when there is a summary thread, but sometimes that may not exist yet.

What is the reason to not open up that 101 forum to suggestions? If you don't open that up, do you mind if I start a thread in the General Discussion area for suggested threads to be added to it?

Nobody ever looks at the General Discussion forum, maybe putting somewhere that has the most activity will work better.

I think it should be opened to everybodies suggestions, let Gator Greg decided what should go on there.
