MOOG LCAs

I’ve got a vibration in my steering wheel at 40 to 50 that I’m pretty sure is a wheel bearing. Taking a look at the front end I noticed that the lower ball joints need new dust covers and or total replacement. Rock auto has full LCA assemblies from MOOG that include a new ball joint for $100 per side. I’ve only seen someone replace the ball joint once here, recently, and it looked like it was more of a pain than replacing the whole assembly. Anyone have any experience with the MOOG assembly?

You need to diagnose and eliminate other potential causes before you go about replacing parts.

I had the same problem with the steering at 60 to 70. Noted feathered or sawtooth wear on the tires. Tested ball joints for wear and they were fine. Everything in the steering system tested fine. I noted the mileage at 110K miles and original shocks. Tested the shocks and they were worn. New Bilstein 5100s cleaned it up. No vibration in steering and feathered wear started to clean up.

Never used the moog, but I would cross reference and see if they list the same part number for 2009 FJ or 4Runner. If so, it won't fit. They often get the parts wrong on items where Toyota made minor changes between years (and the LCA changed in a minor way between 4th and 5th gen).

Also, if you have KDSS, they obviously won't work.

Also, you can replace just the the dust covers with this Toyota part# 4334569025.

Personally, I would not run an aftermarket LCA. Replacing the joint is fine, but for the entire structure... I would stick with OEM. There are certain aftermarket replacement parts that are better than OEM Toyota... but they are typically made at sub standard levels for more profit margin.

Moog is legit. Ran their bjs, off-road hard no problem. Stick with moog or oem
Conversely, I have had nothing but problems with Moog for the last 10 years. Including domestic stuff. As far as I can tell, Moog is now just a re-brander for the cheapest China crap around, trying to eek every penny out of their reputation.
Vast majority of their stuff doesn't work on the 5th gens, as they assumed there were no changes from the previous generation 4runner.

Could be the case now. It has been awhile I guess. I just noticed that oem and moog ball joint seemed hefty and quality compared to other aftermarket parts brands. It would be a good idea to go OEM then. OEM seems to be best for the 4runner lol.
