Moon roof question

I have searched in the past and nothing has came up as this is pretty specific.

I recently messed up my moon roof trying to repair it myself and well long story short, it wont seal and leaks water pretty bad.

I'm looking to replace with a junkyard replacement but before I do, I was wondering if anyone knows if I can swap out with any 4th gen or if it has to be the same year as mine? I have an 07 sport.

Though no longer for sale by Toyota the part number for the glass/frame are the same for 2003 to 2009 4th Gens.

Yes..4...2 in the rear corners and 2 in the front corners.

how did you mess it up? i was just up there the other day regreasing the tracks and pulled it apart.

I broke the plastic piece that catches the water, towards the back of the assembly. It broke because I completely took it out and apart, regreased and putting it back on the tracks is where it broke...Good news is I found a whole assembly for $180!. And I figured out how to test it since it's out of the vehicle. Hopefully everything goes well....now off to pull off the Interior again :cry2:

Dang, that sucks. How are you testing it outside of the vehicle? The guy in the post below did the same, but no info on how he accomplished it. Also the most thorough documentation of how the sunroof actually works that I've seen.

I'm likely doing the same thing later this summer, so would appreciate any tips once you dig into it.

Well I dont actually have it figured out yet lol but I have a plan. I have a 12v drill battery with 16g wire and the appropriate male/female electrical terminals. I have toyotas repair page that shows what pin does what in the moon roof wire harness so I think connecting the ground and touching the pin for " slide up" "tilt up" will make it work. Fingers crossed!

What exactly are you wanting tips on? Removing it or what? What condition is yours in(what can it do right now if anything lol)

That’s a really clever thought about using drill batteries for testing. Since I own both Milwaukee M12, and M18 systems, I have plenty of the 12 volt versions to test with. I’m going to try that out next time I need to test a mod, or something before installation. I normally jump the accessory directly to the vehicle battery to test, but using the drill batteries would be way simpler, and could be done in the house, or garage easier for bench testing. I love reading threads like this and picking up stuff that hadn’t previously crossed my mind!

My sunroof functions, but I get the awful crunching noise when sliding to the fully open position indicating that one of the drive cables is frozen or the glass has been initialized in the wrong spot.

I've done the Toyota TSB twice with no luck, it seems like I'll need to yank the headline and pull the whole unit to diagnose. I also broke one of the plastic clip that holds down the guide block, so had to fab one out of metal.

I'm sick of the rattle and seriously thinking about welding that hole shut. But, I'd like to remove the headliner and study the stupid thing first to see what I can improve upon. My GF's 08 limited doesn't make any sounds so Toyota must've improved some things in that system.

My 2004 moon roof/sunroof is perfectly tight and works very well and no noise at all.

I got mine off a wrecked car, just got back actually lol. Are you in bay area, ca?

My idea to try it out with a 12v drill battery rigged with wires and terminals didn't work to test the moon roof. I think because the key needs to be in the "on" position. So if you can supply power to the car and have key to on position, you can test it that way (thats what I did, had to run jumper cables from running car and connect them to the battery terminals since there was no battery) but if you already have another moon roof sourced, I would pull out the existing and try to see if you can clean and reset everything properly and maybe itll work for ya

A lot of people go that route but that was last resort for me, I wanted my moon roof lol

Toyota wouldn't even touch it so they referred me to an upholstery shop and they quoted me 1300, even if I had removed everything so they could just swap out the assembly. Paid 160 for assembly out of a wrecked car and they time it will take me to do everything so that's a dealeo lol

The one I pulled is off an 08 so hopefully your right lol
But not much you can improve on, just cleaning and lubing it up. If you go that route I would disassemble the entire thing and put it back together piece by piece. I tried to slide the entire system back into the tracks and that's how I broke the drain tray in the back.

Haha thanks! Thats the exact same battery I used! Wish I could take credit lol but My boss came up with that idea. It was genius in theory but the application, not so much. I'm sure itd work for other things but I think the key has to be on the ON position or something (haven't really figured it out yet) for the moon roof to move.

At the junkyard the 12v battery connected to the appropriate pins, did nothing. But then we attached jumper cables to the battery terminals (no battery), turned the key to ON then boom it moved lol

Update!

Just got done putting in the used but new to me moon roof from a wrecked 08 4runner and it's working! (I confirmed that it worked at the junkyard but its working in my car ) Now tomorrow to button everything back together...cant wait till I have a garage, this would all be done tonight lol

A lot of people I spoke to about this said that it's not worth it and waste of time buuuut this could literally be done in a day. Hardest part is locating a working moon roof. Fixing your own, now that's a different story but not the most impossible task if you know what you're doing. Which I definitely did not but I have a new understanding and I'm sure if this one goes out, I'll be able to repair.

Update!

What was wrong originally that prompted all of this?
Once you had the headliner out, could you easily access/assess the condition of the drive cables?

I'm inclined to just source a used one and replace it but haven't dug into it beyond a bit of superficial research.

It hasn't worked since I bought the thing and I just always wanted to fix it. Finally found some time and tackled it.

Um technically yes you can assess the situation once the headliners off but it's easier to work on once it's off and it's only held up by 8 bolts.

If the cables or motor are shot, you're better off sourcing a working used one. Any place I called around my area wouldn't sell me either by itself, had to buy entire assembly
