Moonroof will not close

3rd time to the dealer...advice.

So I was driving on the freeway yesterday with the moonroof open. When I reduced my speed the wind deflector began to adjust when suddenly I hear this loud "crack." Right away I knew something was wrong. Well, when I tried to close the moonroof, the darn thing would not move. It made a slight effort but it would not budge.

I tried to see what was wrong and I think that one of small plastic pieces on the side that pulls/pushes the moonroof broke. Has anyone else had this problem? How was your experience getting it fixed? I assume this falls under the warranty. I have a '04 V6 SR5. Thanks!

Hi! See the attached! If ...

> Problems & Warranty > Recall coming on sunroof

**************************Hello!

According to the invoice dated 04-08-04, "Customer stating that sunroof is sticking." Install "SOP"

$1.3 hours & $122.20 in parts.

CAUSE: Sticking.
CORRECTION: Lubed guides & installed per service bullitin.
COMMENT: Operates normally at this time.

TOY 08231-00801 Noise Kit $103.27
TOY 63207-35040 Base Sub-Assy, Roof $ 48.39
TOY 08887-02004 Body Grease W $ 32.84

Subtotal Parts $184.50
Lab-mechanical $122.20
"Total charge for concern" $306.70

They still have the current invoice since nothing was fixed. I had to use the vehicle after they fixed the belts etc. I suppose that I will receive the rest of the paperwork upon the completion of the work?

Ths sfternoon, I had a call from Toyota Corp. advising that the parts would be sent out next week. In the mean time, the roof makes a nasty GRINDING sound if you attempt to lift it. It will not slide at all.

May 11, 2004

SECOND K-A call from Toyota advising that "Parts should be here by May 23rd. That the new belts any pully's & roof rack will be fixed at the same time."

Keep you eyes and ears open!

If it creaks like mine did, then "replace the front bottom bumper cushions". Sorry, I don't have any part numbers and only that text is on the work order. I've not heard a creak since it's been updated Jan 30th, 2004.

My sunroof was creaking and grinding, too, but only when placing it in the tilt position. It was fixed about two weeks ago. Hopefully, the fix will last for this problem.

Someone is gonna get yelled at

I took my vehicle to the dealer and they kept the car for a couple of hours. They called me and said that they needed to keep it for a couple of days since they needed to order a new sunroof. I was ofered a rental car. I said OK and told them I could only stop by after the service shop closed. Then I get another call an hour later and they tell me that they were able to fix it. I said mmmm OK. I pick up the darn thing, open the sunroof and it seems fine. But when I close it it makes a grinding noise. "Well, maybe it needs to loosen up a little." The next day I open it and it makes a LOUD cracking noise (like it did a couple of days ago). So then I try to close it and guess what...IT DOESN'T! I'm gonna go yell at some people tomorrow. Any similar experiences out there?

Check your head liner for damage from them taking it off! Be prepared to wait for a replacement part if it is damaged!

My rig was at the dealers for *** 34 days *** as they received several liners, all arriving damaged. The head liners on these new rigs are the most fragile I've ever seen in a vehicle. In fact, most of the interior finishing's are way too fragile for an off-road (capable) vehicle.

3rd time to the dealer!!!

Ok, so I took my vehicle back so they could try and fix the moonroof again and guess what....IT STILL WONT CLOSE. This will be third time I take it to get this thing fixed. Any ideas on how I should go about handling this?

My friend mentioned that as well. He also said that if I signed the "Lemon Law waiver" when I bought the vehicle that this would not apply to me. Any further explanation on what I should do would be greatly appreciated. I'm sooooooo pissed!

Call the Toyota Customer Experience center at 1-800-331-4331.
Talk to one of the reps.

Also, you may want to tell your dealer that you want a factory rep to come out and check out your truck.

Good luck.

Update...

Ok, another update...

I took the vehicle to the dealer today for the third time in under a week. As I had mentioned, I picked up the vehicle yesterday and as soon as I opened the sunroof, I heard a loud crack and then it would not close. After many attempts the darn thing closed. Today in the morning I opened/closed it many times and it would occasionaly not close.

So I arrive at the dealership and I talk to the shop and quality control sueprvisor. He goes to my vehicle to see if the sunroof closes. Well when he gets in and pushes the button, it does close. Actually it never got stuck again, but it did make this "rubbing" noise. It seems like the left side was rubbing too much up against the body.

So I told him that the sunroof was not fixed and he insisted that they could not do anything because it was not failing when he operated it. His arguement was that since it was not failing when he opened it that it was not malfunctioning. Basically, I did not have "evidence" that it was not working properlly. So he said they would not do anything until the sunroof jammed again.

Anyways, I could go on forever as there are more details to discuss. But that is kinda what went on today and I feel like it's bull-caca. I guess I understand that they didnt see anything wrong with it, but I know that that the sunroof has not been fixed.

I would appreciate any advice.

I was having a problem with noise when I tilted the sunroof. It sounded like the sunroof was coming out of the headliner. I brought it to dealer and after taking apart the sunroof, found it was a part that was backordered (they did not tell me what part). I picked up my truck on Thursday and opened up the sunroof. I realized that the wind deflector was not adjusting properly but was not alarmed about it. When I went to close it, I heard this loud pop, and I knew it was not good. The sunroof returned back to the open position. I them kept trying to shut it without any success. I finally got so angry that I put my hand over the wind deflector, and held it until the sunroof approached. I got my fingers out safely and finally it closed. I them called up the dealer to thank them for fixing my sunroof. Pitbull, I am now doing what you do. They should have a new sunroof by Monday. Molocono, sounds like exactly what you experienced! :gun:

Yeah, sounds about right.

I took my vehicle to the dealer yesterday and talked to the service manager. He went to look at the sunroof and guess what....it popped right in front of him. "Do I need more evidence?" I say. The guy that helped me the previous day got yelled at. Turns out they have to order some cables for my sunroof. This will be my 5th time I take it to the dealer. They have not been able to fix it.

So when can I start talking about getting a replacement? I mean, if they can't fix it this time I'm gonna be calling some lawyers.

Ok. This is only the third time I am taking it in for a sunroof problem. It all started when I saw that the sunroof was scratched when I took delivery of the truck. I told the service manager and he said I should definitely get it replaced. I was hesitant because I do not like to play with sunroof's, but he said that he is 100% sure it would work. After they installed it, I picked it up, drove it home. When I close the door, I saw the sunroof rattling around in the roof. Went back again and they fixed it. Excuse was a rookie technician. A few weeks later I heard a loud noise when I would tilt it. Brought it back and they said I am number 56 for this part on backorder. I went to close the sunroof when I got home, and I heard the snapping and popping. Now, a sunroof should be in on Monday. I am thinking the same way you are thinking.

Other than my sunroof switch being stuck and the infamous headliner rattle, I've had no problems with it. It did make those cracking and popping sounds two or three times, but nothing bad has happened as a result. It still works pretty well. However, I think my deflector is coming loose, it flaps around a lot when the roof is completely open. I really thing Toyota should have spent more time designing the moonroof. Hopefully whatever sunroof replacement they're supposedly working on will solve all these problems.

The deflector is what caused my sunroof not to close. If I were you, I would be careful. Once that comes totally loose, you will have problems. I cannot tell you if it was a coincidence or if the dealer put my sunroof together wrong.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on it and see what the dealer has to say next time I take it in.

I have received three calls from Toyota Corp advising that the parts came in and I need to schedule an appointment to get the roof completly replaced ALL of it. So I dropped it off. By that afternoon, I had a call advising that they were short more parts! Grrrrrrrrrr.

Call that 800 number and ask for "Paul." He is the dude that I am dealing with. I'm sure that they will get sick of dealing with all of us and actually do something ? ? ?

Good luck!

I also took in my 04 SR5 4runner in today for that exact same issue. I heard a crack and the sunroof would not close...it is open halfway. Will these guys cover for rental? When are they supposed to do it? Any advice....what if they deny whom should I call? Thanks
