Moonroof will not close

I also took in my 04 SR5 4runner in today for that exact same issue. I heard a crack and the sunroof would not close...it is open halfway. Will these guys cover for rental? When are they supposed to do it? Any advice....what if they deny whom should I call? Thanks

They should cover you for a rental. The dealer is very nice and always gives me either a Corolla or Camry when they know my truck will be in service for a while. You just have to give them about a week or two notice. They are supposed to replace some sort of sunroof tray. That is what they said they replaced on mine. It took them about a day and a half . It is a long job because they have to remove the headliner and all that stuff. If you don't get satisfaction, call that 1800 number.

mine did that the other day. I notice that the mood roof was tilt a Little so i went in the 4R to close it and the switch would not work! Try it several time still no power to it. so I'm thinking maybe I blown a fuse or something? so I turn on my map light and it work so it's wasn't the fuse. so I start banging on the piece where the switch it and after a couple of bang the switch work! I'm thinking maybe the harness is lose or something up their? can't seen to get that piece off the headliner.

NO S**T, there I was, Knee deep in a fox hole, with enemy on all sides, and low on ammo.....

I was returning from the ice cream shop with the family, when my son says "hey, let's open the moonroof", as I'm opening it, I hear a very loud crack/bang, so loud that it startles my infant son. I reduce my speed, and attempt to close the moonroof, with no luck. I ended up parking the vehicle under the car port, incase of rain, and start looking in the operators manual.

everything else is the same as read in this post, moonroof wants to close, but decides to take the day off. That's when I get the idea to search "THE Forum" for answers.

This is the only issue that I have had with my 4Runner, but I don't know if it is good or bad, after reading the others comments on this thread.

The other thing that chaps my butt, is that it happened on the 28th of May, late in the evening, and Monday is a holiday, so the repairs will have to wait longer.

I will keep all posted on the results of this repair, thank God it is still under warranty. But we do want it fixed before the long drive home this summer for vacation, approx. 2300 miles.

Dave, did you try to hold the wind deflector down with your hand while closing the sunroof? It kind of sounds like what happened to my sunroof and that is how I got it closed. It took a long time but I was able to close it.

This is scary, everybody's sunroof is breaking at the same time.

I've tried it with no luck. I will continue to try. Right now wife has her 4Runner and will be back shortly.

I did notice this though:
The passengers side of the moonroof ties to close, and has an inch of movement. The drivers side will not budge at all. I've tried to pull on it, while my son pushes the close button, with no success as well.
Also, the track quard on the passengers side, device close to the wind deflector moves as well, and no movement on the other side as well.

Hope you can understand somewhat of what I'm saying, I'm not savvy in the lingo of moonroof parts and components.

success in closing

with some help from my son pulling down on the wind deflector and pushing the close button, and I pulling on the damn moonroof, we were finally able to close it.
At least now I don't feel like the vehicle is keeping me confined to my house, and the wife can also go shopping.


I'll keep you updated on the "battle at the maintenance department".

I am glad you were able to get it closed. It took me like 30 minutes to close it by myself. Just remember not to open it on the next sunny day!

That will be the hardest battle you will fight! It will make the work you did in the airfoce look like nothing!

Sorry to hear all those problems happening to you folks. Is someone out there that have a sunroof with no problem or what so ever? I also have a sunroof and it is making think twice now before opening it. Hope you all can get it fix soon.

My sunroof crapped out!

Same a everyone above....nice out, open the roof and crack!! I try to close it and it closes about 1/2 inch then opens again. I decide to go for a fast drive and it finally closes once I drive over 60mph. I have an appointment in about a week....we'll see what happens...

The only problem I've had is a rattle. No mechanical problems with the sunroof. Use it all the time, too.

I've had no problems with anything minus a small rattle in the tailgate for the first 30000 miles. Talked to the dealer today and they are giving me a loaner. I got a free one with my 30000 mile service.....loaded Sienna. (As the kids seem to multiply, that might be the thing to get). I wouldn't mind getting something sportier for a loaner. No really sporty Toyota's that come to mind.

Now the stupid sunroof works great! I decided to open it, there was a loud crack and then I closed it. The next time I opened it, everything was fine. No cracks or grinding noises. I tried it again about 10 times and it works flawlessly! I have no idea why it made the crack, everything looks ok. I still have the appointment next week. I'll try to make it get stuck again before I go in or I'll get that "unable to reproduce problem" at the dealer.

Cause: Sun roof cable jammed
Correction: Found sunroof cable jamed, closed sunroof and ordered parts, remove d seats/interior trim/ headliner/ sunroof assembly, replaced cable, replaced all components and tested, sunroof working to specs.

Costs (still under warranty)
Parts $861.17
Sublet Repairs $ 30.00
Lab-Mechanical (labor) $239.54

Total $ 1130.71

They kept the vehicle and gave me a rental car, they paid for, it took one day for them to repair the vehicle, but they only claimed 4.5 total hours

The vehicle still does not sound the exactly the same, wind sound in the compartment when all windows are closed. We will see how it sounds when we go on vacation, planning to drive home.

Mine has been doing this over the last 3 months. I have a 2004 V8 4X4 SE. with only 7k miles.

It all started a few months ago when it got stuck for the first time. I could close it by exercising the switch repeatedly.

Finally, it started to get stuck open and not respond to the switch (I also had the loud cracking noises). In order to close it I have to hold the switch down while pulling like hell on it.

Anyway, I haven't opened it since and I'm trying to find time to get it to the dealer.

I called the dealer and asked about a loaner car but they said if they only keep the 4-runner lees than a day then I have to pay for the loaner

I know whats going to happen. They're going to try and do a rush job and I'll have to keep bringing it back.

Yup, I had the same issues as you guys and had them replace numerous components in the sunroof as well. It seems this is a real weak point on the 4th gens, but at least it is something that doesn't leave you stranded on the side of the road....

or your wheels don't fall off or car catches on fire spontaneously.

I've got a 2006 sr5, and my sunroof was stuck in the tilt position. I unhooked my battery, tried the roof again and tadow!!! It worked. must have reset something. :reddance:

I have the same problem as you are describing in this thread on my 03 limited, heard the infamous crack and pop, now the sunroof is completely open and will not close. I just bought the car, the sunroof worked fine before when I was testing it, and on the second day that I have the car it does this!! I wouldn't mind it as much if it was summer but seeing as this is winter and I am in Canada I need to get this fixed asap. ( it is snowing like crazy here)

I see this is a fairly old thread and most of these issues were covered by warranty. I was wondering if anyone has fixed this without going to the dealer and if so how did you do it, is there a troubleshooting guide out there for this, I am hesitant about just pulling like hell on the sunroof in fear that I may break something
