Long time lurker 2nd time poster here, please help. I've been scouring the endless threads on this subject and I'm still confused. I already posted in the Lift Info and FAQ but got no response, so here's a new thread.
Multiple threads/tables list 3rd gen 4runner stock OE front coils at 16mm x 345mm and 580 lbsf/in. I cannot tell which years this refers to and if this includes the '99 tall coils. I'd love to see better/more reliable data than what I found listed below.
OME guide shows 880 front coils at 16mm x 365mm and 500lbsf/in, 10% stiffer than OE rate of 490 lbs/in (see below).
The OME 880 is considered by many to be a stiffer coil than the 99 talls so either the commonly listed OE spring rate of 580 lbs/in is incorrect OR OME lists it incorrectly. Seems like plenty of people regard both of these as true but someone is wrong here. Also, OME shows the 881s at 500 lbsf/in as well, yet the product guide lists them as a heavy load application. How does the slightly longer (10mm) 881 spring with the same number of coils and same spring rate as the 880s yield a heavy load application?
My background/application: I just hit 180K miles (owned for 90K) and well overdue for replacement of what I believe are the original stock shocks and coils on all 4 corners of my 2000 4runner 3.4L SR5 4x4. I'm running Dueller AT 265/70/16's and looking for only a mild 1-2" lift with priority given to eliminating the saggy butt. Its my daily driver and I don't off-road or tow much except for the occasional backpacking trip and Baja surf trip when the vehicle is fairly heavily loaded. I would definitely prefer a little rake unloaded than reverse rake when loaded and don't want to mess with air lifts.
My plan so far I'm considering Bilstein 5100's on all four, then 906's in the rear and either '99 talls or OME 880's in the front. Price is a factor with OME 880's coming in at $167 for the pair vs. $260 for new 99 talls from online Toyota parts dealer. I know there's a lot of options and I'll be happy with either front coil, but I would definitely appreciate some input on the following questions:
1) Should I run 99 talls or OME 880 coils in the front and why? Why would anyone spend more on new 99 talls when 880's can be had for over $100 less? That would cover the cost of ordering the fronts pre-assembled from Wheelers which seems like a no-brainer to me.
2) Much of the info I've read is from 2015 and older; is it still true Bilstein 5100s are only offered for either Tacoma or Tundra? A quick search of Bilsteins product guide shows different part numbers for ride height adjustable 5100s for Tacoma, 4runner and Tundra. Regardless, I know many people run Tundra 5100's up front but would this be too stiff for a stock set-up and weight with new 880 coils?
3)Are there any other bushings, boots, joints etc that should be replaced while I'm doing the lift install? Obviously I will be inspecting everything as I go, but just wondering if I should have any of this stuff ordered and ready to go before the vehicle is up on stands.
I know this got pretty wordy, but I greatly appreciate any info you all might be able to provide.
