More dealership woes

Where do I start ?

I brought my 2021 TRD ORP into my local dealer to have my winter tires removed for my new Toyo AT-3 tires to be mounted on newly acquired TRD Pro Gun Metal wheels. I also purchased new factory TPMS sensors from them since I figured the dealer would be the best choice to install all of this to ensure the sensors would be properly calibrated etc.
I was told the expected wait time would be two hours, well after three hours in the waiting room I began to feel a little uneasy, how long can this take ??
So the service rep finally shows up and tells me he has some bad news, it appears the mechanic working on my car has broken a stud on one of the front wheels, okay shit happens... , he says it will take another half hour to remedy the situation.
Well an hour later still no update, finally after another half hour he is back again with more bad news, the mechanic has now managed to strip the knuckle when reassembling the front end !! They also dont have a replacement knuckle in stock and its going to take two days to get a new one !!!
I asked if the this tech knew what he was doing and the response was, yes he is just having a bad day !!!!
Now I am livid , been here for over four hours for a job that should really only have taken an hour max.
They dont have any courtesy cars left so I get my sales rep involved who happened to be close by and now the service manager decides that I can have his Highlander as a loaner until the part arrives in two days.

I am done dealing with with these people, they charge a premiuim for this level of incompetent work.

What is it with these dealerships are they hiring complete morons and providing little or no training ??

Wow! Their sell is they use factory trained mechanics so in turn you pay a premium in price. That shouldn’t have happened.

This is why you don't take your vehicle to the dealer for things that are not really in their realm .. tire shops do tires all day long. Let them rotate your tires too, or do it yourself and inspect your brakes at the same time. Don't go to the dealer for oil changes ... not their bag, do it yourself.
, etc., etc. There are too many stories on here about dealers screwing up seemingly simple jobs.
If I want it screwed up, I can do that myself!

This is why I do it myself. I’m not paying for someone to come down the learning curve and burn up my time while doing so. I can do an oil change in 30 minutes. I can do brakes both sides in under an hour. I would wait longer than that at a dealer, plus the commute.

First of all let me start by saying that I'm very sorry for your bad luck and experience, it must really suck. Unfortunately most of these "simple" jobs are performed by the lowest qualified techs who have the least experience, often apprentices, or just finished their apprenticeship. The Master Techs, who could do these type of jobs in their sleep are working on major problems that require advanced troubleshooting skills and normally aren't doing tire swaps.

I'm glad that in the end they gave you a loaner and I'd guess that the tech who messed up your 4Runner will have someone babysit him through the follow up repair, or at minimum check his work before they give you back the keys. In these situations people often ask for free services like oil changes from the dealers, but I agree with the other guys in this thread that I don't let dealers change my oil. This sounds completely like someone new using an impact without knowing just how easily it can snap a wheel stud.

I wish you the best with the repair, lets hope someone more skilled assists.

sh!t happens, you got a loaner, let it go. OR, buy a domestic vehicle and use their service department. I guarantee you will be wishing you had a service department and waiting area as nice as toyota does.

agreed shit happens, I typically have the worst luck with online orders. As for service on cars itll vary shop to shop. As for the OP let it go and ask for a free service of some sort to make up for the hassle. I let the dealers work on the cars till service is up ( 5 years service plan) and then go to independent shops or do it myself

I bought an over the range microwave from Home depot months ago at $600. The first microwave arrived and it was damaged, I needed it so I installed it. The delivery guys (3rd party) was supposed to open it but didnt. I called within 10 minutes after opening it and received a $100 off and another order. The second one arrived and it was damaged too. CSR took $200 off that one and placed another order. The 3rd arrived damage but was in better condition than the 1st. Swapped that out and called again, CSR took $150 off and offered to order another, I told her Ill go through the manufacturer. Manufacturer is shipping a new case and door for it to be installed by a 3rd party service.

that's a pretty sucky situation. mistakes happen though - I get it that it sucks when it happens to you, and it's an inconvenience. if it's the first time something like this has happened then simply thank them for the loaner vehicle and be on your way. ya inexperienced workers in any field suck when they break your stuff or have to redo things but this is how people become experienced. you aren't paying for the parts or labour so hey it's not that big of a deal

if you ever plan on returning to that service dept. it pays to be nice, they deal with so many unhappy customers they tend to remember the nice ones

Two terrible takes. The OP is reasonable in his being upset with the dealership.

Agreed! These two acting like he should be ok with this happening as though they would be if they were in his shoes. It is not unreasonable to expect a dealership to the be the top notch facility for whatever your vehicle needs. As many times as they have tried to sell me tires and an alignment I would be livid if I had given in and this crap happened.

I get it, it's frustrating and quite silly for this to happen. Not sure it's something I'd get "livid" about though and they did provide a loaner which are damn near impossible to come by these days. There's always a risk of a tech screwing something up or running into a hiccup on a seemingly easy job.

Toyota wheel studs are historically weak sauce and easy to snap, especially if they've been overtorqued in the past. The only vehicles I've ever had wheel studs snap are on Toyotas.

I am interested to know why the knuckle was being messed with though. That shouldn't be necessary when all one needs to do is hammer the broken stud out and install a new one.

That was my thought. WTH were they doing with the knuckle just mounting a set of tires and putting in a new wheel stud?

Ive been there both with shops and dealers and my own doing. If he got a loaner whats the fuss? I mean i get it, you want your own vehicle back but it was a couple minor broke parts that are getting replaced for free. I guess im the only one that looks are getting a free loaner as i have a vehicle to use and not put miles on my own.......for free. The car didnt fall off a lift or roll out into a highway. what this is, is a first world problem that had a first world solution and no one is any worse for the wear aside from the tech learning and trying to make a living after probably getting a ear full from his boss. Yall can be mad and bitter but i promise, this really really really isnt that bad.

Also my 99 dodge ram was notorious for the studs breaking off during a wheel removal. IDK why but it was a very common issue even with aftermarket studs. I happened nearly everytime i got the tires roated and I had that truck for 250k miles. It was never anyones fault and while it was a major inconvenience, why be mad? Sh!t happens man.

He wasn't exactly given a loaner right out of the gate though. He had to fight to get it even after they screwed up what should be a very simple procedure. The go to should have been here is your loaner no questions asked and we are sorry...not let me get my sales person involved to somehow coerce the service manager into getting him something to drive.

true, however he did state they didnt have any loaners available. Like I said previously, go to a domestic dealer and have this situation happen. He likely would have been told to go pound sand and offered a ride home. The service departments ive dealt with for my corolla and tundra have far exceeded those for my dodge or chevy. as the saying goes, the squeaky wheel get the grease. He squeaked and got the grease, not sure why its such an issue aside from wasting a few hours at the dealer.
