More Newbie Questions--98 4wd Limited

1) It does not have any tire changing tools--iron, jack, etc. Where is the best place to get these? Looking at the owner's manual and how to lower the spare, I assume I need the tool made just for the 4R?

2) What is the best way to "exercise" the locking rear diff? The two previous owners were both women who used it as a DD to work and back...I kind of doubt it has ever been engaged. I did change the rear diff fluid, but have not used it yet.

3) The OutdoorLogic bumpers look great. Does anyone know about how much they weigh (full deal for a limited)?? Would these be good deer guards? Deer are thicker than rats around here....and it's not if, but when.

You can always try your local pick'n pull yard for jack and tire changing tools. Did you look under the rear seat for the tools? Also check any cubby holes in the cargo area.

For the locker, put the truck in 4-low, go to a dirt or gravel road (loose pack), engage the locker, and start driving figure eights until it locks. Repeat X 10.

If you can't get it to lock, you may have to take apart the actuator and clean it. There may be a write-up on here, else I'm sure there is one in the 80-series Land Cruiser section on IH8MUD.com.

I don't have any good information to offer about the Outdoor Logic bumpers.

IMOP, I would keep the truck as light as possible, as all extra weight you put on it will affect handling, suspension life, and more importantly in this economy, gas mileage.

highly doubt pick n pull will have your parts, ebay is the best bet
1. yes its a rod designed for our 4runner spare, tire iron jack go to harbor frieght tools cheap and good quality

2. lock it in straight when rrlock light turns to solid red try to turn if you hear tire squeak then locker is working

3. i love the outdoor logic bumper i think its the best looking bumper they sell for our truck, very strong not as heavy as ARB but they are somewhat expansive but you get what you pay for if i have money outdoorlogic will be my #1 choice for front bumper

That's the 1st time I've heard those words in the same sentence!

IIRC, the ODL bumper weighs in at 90 lbs and the ARB at <80. So basically they are the same, but I do think the ODL looks more modern.

Did you look under the passenger side rear seat for the tools and jack? I don't think that the previous women DD would have taken them out or used them.

I love HF for sh*t tools like spare hand wrenches and little stuff like zip ties and wire ends, or single use tools. But if it's load bearing, complex, or electrical, I go elsewhere - usually Sears or Costco. I actually have a lot of Husky (Costco) tools and they are just as good as the Craftsman tools I have IMO.

Some of the best power tools I have used came from HF. For example, a 4 1/2" angle grinder (the orange handle one) from HF is by far the best bang for the buck. I have abused them for years and not one has ever slowed down or failed. And they're about 1/10th of the cost of some of the name brands.

All I've ever used are HF pneumatic tools. For the past ten years I can count on one hand how many times I've oiled them, and they work flawlessly.

I'm not saying that their tools are Snap-On quality, but they are certainly on par with the other chinese-made tools that are badged Rigid, Dewalt, Ryobi, Craftsman, etc.

I've worn out 2 HF drills easily so I don't buy too many electric tools from them anymore. But you're right, at a fraction of the cost, no harm done if/when they do break. I agree their angle grinders are actually pretty decent, I've used one before. That's one electric tool I'd buy from them.

A couple HF coil spring compressors almost snapped and killed me (the bars were starting to crack after bending out of shape). I also bent a 3 ton jack stand by lowering my 4runner down on it just a little too fast from ~1" above. So I don't buy load bearing tools from them. Or anything that could kill/injure me if it fails.

I bought a new torque wrench from HF and compared it to my Dad's freshly calibrated Mac about a month or 2 later. The HF was at 110 lbs when the Mac said 150. So I don't buy precision tools from there anymore. Their air tools are ok IMO. But whatever they say it's rated at, I just half it. 5000 rpms = 2500 rpms at HF.

I've probably bought about a dozen tools/items from them that were already broken before I left the store, no kidding. They have a good return policy, but that's just because they have to! All in all though, I still shop there for a lot of stuff so I'm glad they exist.

Thanks for all the great info! And, YES--the tire tools were under the rear passenger seat all along! That's not the first time this forum has set me straight and saved me money and I know it won't be the last.
