About a month ago I was getting ready for a trip to atlanta and the radio wouldn't work in the 4r. I noticed the volume wouldn't work on the dash or the steering wheel but would change modes or stations fine. Well tonight it did it again same deal no volume until you turn the vehicle off and back on again then its fine. Anyone experience this??? Also my wife was riding in the back seat passenger side with our newborn and said it smelled like something burning. Hot exhaust???Anybody have any ideas what this could be? Please only adults here unlike my last post where toyota loyalist jumped me for having issues with a 4r.

Mine did the same thing a few times. There is a TSB for the 03's and I had it done they replaced the rear amplifier and haven't had a problem since. In the TSB it says it only happens in cold weather which is when I had the problem.

I had the headunit replaced after 3 months. Same symtoms, everything worked except no sound. It would magically restore itself if left off for a while. I had to drive to the dealership directly after this happened a few days after the first time so they could actually see it. The first time, they wouldn't do anything because they could not duplicate the problem.

It was replaced and had been fine now for almost two years.
