I went to the range last Saturday to take a friend shooting for his birthday. I spent most of the time sitting with a Howa .223 in my hands picking stuff off the hill. And now I'm wanting one. But not the Howa. After doin a little research I've decided to go with the mossberg MVP. Bolt action, .233, accepts ar-15 mags which I have plenty of, 18.5 inch barrel, and a "medium" fluted bull barrel. It seems perfect for everything I would use it for. 50-300 yards at the range or hiking threw the mountains. Anyone have one or any experience with one? I've done some research and honestly can't find many issues with this 500 dollar rifle.

Pretty decent for a varmint gun.

I prefer a repeater 45-70 brush gun for my hikes and bolt action with AR magazines seems kinda weird to me, but can't go wrong with the low price.

Not sure about Mossberg's build quality or reliability these days. I shot one at the range when we were lighting up our ARs (makes sense with the AR mags) and it was accurate and reliable. Not sure what else to add. I wouldn't trade my 6940 for one.

For the bang for the buck and what you are telling me you are pretty much right now. I'm not sure how much of a tac driver it is but for what your needs are it seems like a good deal. I like the fact that you know it's ability. I just shake my head when guys talk about hitting 900 with a .223, it can be done but yeah.... Anyhow good luck and have fun with it.

^ reminds me of a guy I know who just swears his 45 colt shoots dead flat at 250. Not sure how you argue with that particular brand of dumb.

OP, sounds like a great deal for the buck; have you ever checked out a bolt .17 HMR? might be worth a look see, just to compare

17hmr? I'm not just gonna be walkin in the woods with a rifle for no reason... And with a 17hmr all I'm gonna drop is a bird or a squirrel plus It's just not cost effective enough. I look at them like a rich mans 22 almost.

Cheap is the goal. 900 yards? Why waste your damn time... My AR can do 4-500 all day but it also has a 20" heavy barrel and weighs almost 10 pounds

That's the reason I'm leaning towards it. I enjoy taking my time with a bolt action but can't stand loading them in the cold. Ar mags and striped clips. Plus it makes for less time reloading.
 
I just realized i have no idea what i was thinking. What I MEANT to say was a bolt 22-250. My buddy gets coyotes and whatnot with his out to 450yds pretty damn reliably. Shoots flatter and with a much higher velocity than a 223.

I would bypass the Mossberg and pick up a Remington 700, for 100 bucks more. Eventually you would be able to customize it more to your style of shooting.

And yeah I can do 900 with my 223

 
Haver said 900 yards wasn't possible. I just said why waste the time. And I'd go for a 700 but I'm 100 bucks more into it and still scopeless. Then needing to get the barrel cut down to 18.5" a new stock and and and. By that time I've got a 2000 dollar rifle. I'm fine with doing that later on but that doesn't fill the current need for a cheap rifle that I don't need to care allot about. Just need something to throw on my shoulder and go with.

The biggest selling points of it right now are
1. Can't find many people disappointed with it
2. Price.
3. The length.
4. The mags.

And I could still get it in .308 and use ar-10 mags.
 
That does look like a fun rifle. Not sure how awesome that scope is going to be though if its included in the grand total of $681. But like you said its a great place to start. Let us know how she shoots.

You could go by Dicks and pick up a 223 varmint for 4 bills with scope. Take a hack saw to the barrel clean up the crown and still be money ahead. Just sayin....Blake

Never could like mags hanging that far below the stock line on a bolt gun, but it is your money.....

Don't know dick. And I'm not in Tennessee.... Stuck in kalifornia with my 10 rounds.
 
I've been interested in the Mossberg Patrol, is the Predator something different?

Also a 700 as they can be had used for not too much plus they have a lot of accesories for them. That and they have a large following and have been around for awhile. I'm not totally sold on a 223 cartridge so different options with the 700 is something I like.

Interested in what you end up with.

^^^^this. It seems much more versatile and I don't see the point of a .223 in the mountains. What is the planned use? Maybe I'm missing something?
 
These are just my thoughts, take them or leave them as you please. I am just offering up my advice as I have been down this road on several occasions.

Some things to consider.

Have you ever shot an 18" barreled .308? THEY ARE LOUD
The muzzle flash in the early morning or late evening will blind you.
AR mags are a great concept on you guessed it AR's, on most every other rifle they get in the way.

Never cared for the .308 as there are other chamberings that intrest me more. That being said for someone who does not handload there isn't a much better caliber with all of the bullet selections out there for it. I just think there are better platforms.

A remington SPS in .308 can be had for less than 450.00 bucks, you can buy Leupold scopes on ebay for 300.00 or less and a set of rings and bases won't set you back much more. You will be light years ahead with the setup that I described than you would with the mossberg. Just my thoughts.

Either way you go, as long as you are shooting that is all that matters.....
 
My bad, don't know where I got the .308 from in your post, looks like you want to go .223 (which I think is a great idea).

I mentioned getting it in .308 a couple posts back. I get what your sayin about havin such a short .308 and such. I really should just use the money and get a scope for my ar. A 20 inch heavy barrel would most likely keep up with that mossberg.
 
Another thought might be getting a second upper for your AR, like an 18" SPR. Then you could just swap it out for the lighter version when needed. Just a thought.......Blake

also, i think you can get a better gun for the price.

i would also recommend a caliber other than .223.
mostly because i detest it.

that is, unless you are out hunting varmints, then by all means, stick with it.
