Oh, and there have been plenty of historical examples of state law and federal law discordance. It generally gets hashed out in courts. I'm the OP and I'm saying that this thread wasn't intended to start a debate on gun control or outdated vice laws from the previous century.

throw in my 2cents

if you're in Denver a good place to go shooting is Centennial gun range. its big, lots of lanes (sometimes offer groupons) and they have a tremendous selection. you can go in and test out all of the guns for grip/size and order online cause its cheaper. on the con side they are a little snooty.
me personally, I went with a caliber where ammo was cheaper, so I have two 9mm (one for conceal one for home) and an AK47 in the 7.62*39. ammo is cheap and easy to come by so you get a lot more practice and range time in. walmart carries both readily available and doesn't have box limits now like they do on the .22. cabellas also has plenty of stock but they are a hair more expensive. on my conceal weapon (S&W MP Shield) I made sure to have a safety but my Sig Sauer does not have one.
I have a CCW in CO, I cant speak to the MMJ but if I read correctly it is a felony to carry and be out drinking. I don't drink much so its not an issue but if I go to a bar or something I leave mine at home.

have fun. be safe. practice. if you need a contact to take your CCW class (don't go to ganders or any of those places) let me know. I went to a great instructor and reasonably priced and he lets you shoot a lot of different guns.

For a rifle, AK or an AR. Both are great rifles with pro's and con's.
For instance... I wish my AK was lighter, but I wish my AR was a bigger caliber. Both of these things are obtainable, but like anything, there's a cost.

I have a friend who always says "Everyone should have at least one AR."

Shotguns- Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, Either in a 18" "Home defense" platform is a great place to start. Once again, you can customize these as you see fit, but they are also inexpensive and quite reliable. I've had both and prefer the Remy.

are you saying the shield is a womens gun

I love my AK M92 super fun to shoot. I have it tacticaled (?) out but I think I may convert it back to the wood look.

my issue with ordering ammo online, is it starts cheaper but by the time you add shopping the cost per round isn't as good (at least I've found) and plus you have to wait.

4473 clearly states that marijuana use is unlawful.

ATF wrote a letter confirming this.

The stance of the Federal government is that this is unlawful, regardless of intent of use.

You're breaking the law if you have a gun and committing a felony by filling out the 4473 stating otherwise.

This thread is over.

Go write Udall and Obama a letter and see if they want to get the ATF to change their language.

Regardless of what anyone thinks or how they feel... LandCruiser is absolutely correct. Fill out the 4473 and lie on 11c and let the BATFE find out. You'd think they have "better" things to do but you'd be wrong. I have personally arrested people for lying on the state and federal forms.

I own just about every caliber and style of gun- 22lr, 9, 40, 45, 223, 308, 30-30, 30-06.... breathe.... etc, etc, etc, you get the point.... i live in Texas, walking distance from a gun range and my last job (the company owned a 600 yd range that I could walk to during lunch)

My suggestion to new shooters is buy a comfortable gun that shoots cheap ammo and will shoot it for a long time. Nothing wrong with the XD at all.

If you are buying the gun for defense, buy a 9mm. The ammo is cheap and it will hurt an assailant just fine when you need it. If someone tells you a 9mm isn't big enough, ask them to prove it by allowing you to shoot them and find out. To this day, no one has taken me up on that offer. :tongue1:

If you are truly getting into guns to enjoy the sport and hang out at shooting ranges. Buy a 22lr pistol. You can spend hours at the range perfecting skills and still have money to take the woman friend out that night.

Because per the Feds, they're mutually exclusive interests and the OP mentioned being a (federal) schedule 1 controlled substance user.

I would suggest a Smith & Wesson or Ruger .357 revolver with a 4" barrel. You can shoot .38 special if .357 is too much to handle or like I do, because it's much cheaper. To be honest, I have found a lot of the polymer framed, sub compact handguns to be very snappy and more difficult to keep on target due to their light weight. A heavier handgun will often be easier to keep on target for more accurate follow-up shots. A quality revolver is also inherently more reliable than a semi, easier to clean, and God forbid you find yourself in a situation that requires you to use your revolver you will not have to worry about a safety, mag release, failure to fire or failure to eject.. (You can have a failure to fire with a revolver but all you need to do is squeeze the trigger again). Anyways, just so you know I have semi's and revolvers and I love them both,I just think you shouldn't overlook a good quality revolver.

If you are a new shooter I would get a good quality 22 pistol , learn the mechanics of trigger control ,stance things like that.

Then graduate to higher caliber rounds. Rent a few guns at the range until you find what you like. Learn to take apart. Learn to clean it. Make it bespoke to your needs.

If you mean federal law gets upheld over state law, you're correct. State laws can be different from federal law only in that they can be more restrictive. Not less.

A good example are waterfowl hunting regulations, which are based on federal law, regardless of state. A state can require additional restrictions, such as closing seasons, reducing bag limits in certain areas or for specific species, not allowing hunting on lakes without foliage cover, etc. But they can never - for example - allow a person to have 4 shells in the gun (fed says three or less) or allow the use of lead shot.

Not true, most states have a zero tolerance policy of being drunk and in possession of a gun (i.e. the BAC needs to be 0), treatment of alcohol dependency can fall under the "mental health" clause of the 4473, and chronic opioid use has also been cited as having an "addiction."

The enforcement of the laws is spotty, but just giving you examples of how the laws CAN be used to take guns away or make someone's life a legal hell.

You are right, however and I didn't make this clear beforehand. You can be an alcoholic and still carry and yes even alcoholics are sober sometimes. Just like pot smokers, they aren't high all the time. Point being, you can ccl in oregon even though you have a pot card you just can't be smoking a doobie while packing heat, just the same as you can't be drinking or drunk and still carry,vsomething about altered state of mind...:zoom:
And of course this is all local state laws that are choosing to not enforce federal laws, so yes it's all illegal in the eyes of big brother
