Most comfortable all season 31" tire?

I upgraded my tires to 33.5" 255/85/16 because I thought I was going to offroad a lot (plus it looked kind of cool) but I am not too happy with the tires (Cooper Discoverer ST). So, I am thinking about going back to stock. What are the most comfortable 31" all season tires that will most likely see 99% highway miles and maybe 1% light trails? I'm most concerned about having a soft ride and highway noise.

Also, this may sound like a crazy question, but has anyone downsized to a 30" tire? What is a good 30'' tire ratio (ie 255/55/16, etc?). Any cons of a 30" tire besides ground clearance?

I was very happy with these tires and if I were looking for a all season light truck tire this would be it. I'm sure others will chime in with there experiences as well but Mine were 265/70/16 I think you can get them in the 265/75/16 but I'm not sure.

Why not go down to a 32" tire?

31" with a 3" lift will look really funny.

I second the Michelin LTX. It's a really nice tire.
 
It's funny you mentioned those tires because I was just at tirerack and I narrowed down the results to that tire you listed, based on the noise and comfort survey they had, although it was the MS2 version of the tire.

Anyone else have any more opinions? Also, what's a good 30" ratio so I can do some research myself. For the 31" tire I just picked the stock tire so it has the ratio in there already. Thanks.

With your lift I would go with a 265/75/16 What part of the country are you from?
 
Mickey Thompson ATZ's are nice, and about the same price as any BFG or Michelin Tire. I run those in the winter, but find my set a little small. 265's in that flavor would look great on your rig!
 
what do u not like about the cooper st i have had a couple of sets and had good luck with them i really like the cooper stt they will be what i get next after the bfg at wear out
 
The Michelin LTX MS is a great tire. I had them on my old Tacoma and they did great at highway speeds and were very comfortable. They didn't do too bad off road the few times I took them. They last forever too.
 
If you are looking for a street tire, I would go with a "P" series tire. P as in passenger car tire. That is what came on our 4runners. Thinner/softer sidewalls , less expensive and lighter. The big downfall is that the tread depth is half of an LT tire.
 
I'm also gonna agree on the LTX...great tire, lasts forever, quiet, smooth...perfect for a daily driver or a truck that sees mostly highway...

Gerdo also makes a good point, go with a "P" rated tire for an even better ride, but an "LT" tire if you plan on leaving the pavement.
 
Another option is the Firestone Destination LE. My girlfriend has them on her Grand Cherokee and they work great. They have worn really good and are quiet on the freeway. Haven't taken off the pavement because it is a 2wd, but I'm sure they would do fine.
 
The Firestone Destination LE is a good tire, the AT offers a little more aggresive tread. I would consider these middle priced tires.

I just put a set of the Michelin LTX AT tires on my 4runner, after a recent trip to CO for about 1900 miles round trip, I found them quiet on the road, good traction in rocks, mud and ice!! Most of the way, I got 20-21 miles per gallon on the highway doing 75-80. This set of tires replaced my Michelin LTX MS tires which gave a good ride as well.
 
It isn't the size that made your Coopers uncomfortable. It's the style and construction. You need to look for "highway all season" tires not AT. Search Tire Rack. You can check customer reviews and ratings which give a good indicator of road comfort and noise.
 
My Dueler AT 695s are VERY comfortable. They are more quiet than the Michelin Cross Terrain SUVs that were on it before. Noticeably cushier ride too. I was quite pleasantly surprised with the performance (on-road).
I am expecting nothing but spectacular performance in the snow as well.
 
why not keep the tires you have and air them down 5-10 psi.

thatll give you a softer ride.

and wont cost you extra money.
 
The Uniroyal Laredo Cross Country tires that I have on my 4Runner now are great for highway driving. Really quiet tires, pretty soft ride, and never had issues with hydroplaning. Gonna get rid of them soon though since they obviously aren't good off road.
 
Anyone have experience with the Kumho KL61? Looks nice, gets good reviews, pretty cheap, etc. Might be my next tire.

I had some Kumhos on my old Grand Prix. Worst tires I ever owned. Ended up after so many unsucessful attempts to get them balanced the dealer finally threw up his hands and swapped them out with some Toyos for free. Basically IMO, there is a good reason they are so cheap. I didn't have that exact same model tire but I would never consider "Cum hoes" again.

If it were me with your stated goal, I'd just run the factory P265/70R16 size tire. This is considered a 31" size.

As for which tires to run, mine came with the absolutely crap Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires in the P265/70R16 size. After numerous attempts to balance those things by the Dealer, I just gave up and traded them in on some good tires at a Discount Tire.

I went with the Michelin LTX M/S in LT265/75R16 C. Then the Toyo Open Country AT in LT265/75R16 C,. And currently the Toyo Open Country HT in LT265/75R16 C. This size is considered a 32" size

Of those three tires, the current Toyo HT's are the quietest and most comfortable tires I've had on the 'Runner. I recently was able to try out the HT's in a blizzard. There was about 8" of snow on the road, and in 4wd they did okay. They didn't do quite as well as the previous Toyo AT's in snow, but they are so much smoother riding and quieter, that I'm okay with the trade off.
