I got a link for Consumer Reports on my MSN home page. They show the most and least reliable cars. The 4Runner is on the list for the most reliable.

The thing that sealed the deal was the owner feedback regarding problems & reliability. I found that the 2004 Touareg had close to TWENTY, Serious, complaints of problems for every ONE complaint about a 4Runner. It is not uncommon to hear about a 2004 Touareg spending 20, 30, 40 or 50+ days in the shop for nagging problems. That is probably why VW of America has had to buy back a LOT of 2004 Touaregs. Bottom line, don't even consider one of these when shopping for a pre-owned vehicle you might be buying someone else's problem/headache.

none of our toyotas, (98 rav, 99 T4R, and 04 T4R) or our 86 subaru have ever seen the inside of a shop, however the 2 Ford explorers we have/had (98 and 00) have been in the shop more times than I can count. I am definately not surprised to see the ford explorer on the list for least reliable.

I owned a 05' Nissan Titan for only 3 months. The WORST POS I ever owned. I have been a loyal Toyota fan for many years and decided to try a Nissan out....BAD DECISION. Nissan quality these days have gone to crap. The F150 is pretty decent, but just doesnt have the "quality and refined" feel of the Toyotas. I must say that my 06' 4Runner is the best of all the Toyotas I have owned.

Nissan has really been taking it in the shorts for most all their new trucks these days. I've had 3 Nissans: 88 Pathfinder; 91 300Z; 99 Altima. The Z was the only high maint. of them. The 88 Pathy had 220k near trouble-free miles when I sold her last month - most reliable vehicle I've owned to date. Wife's 99 Altima has had ZERO problems, I mean nothing, and it's approaching 95k miles!

I hope & expect the Runner to do as well, but one computer has already been replaced - electonics could be the weak link here.

Nissan makes some great V6 engines, but they didn't do their homework on the Titan & Armada. We'll see on the new Pathfinder.

tbought that basically sums up the auto industry...
cant go wrong with the japanese,(unless its a newer nissan)
surprised to see the infinity, the mercury mariner and the chevy monte carlo in the most reliable section though

I can't believe the Honda Ridgeline was on the best list. I'm not sure what the criteria were, but Honda Ridgeline owners have been experiencing quality problems. The worst seems to be a leak that fills up the floor in some cases. I'd be pissed if I purchased a new vehicle with a leak that cased the carpet to get wet and smell. It might start for you in the morning, but you'll have wet feet....that's not reliability in my book.

Yeah, and check out the Edmunds review. Four blown struts while going 10 - 15 MPH down a dirt road! I traveled roads like that or worse getting to remote campsites with our Nissan minivan for years.

The reviewer did mention the Tacoma in comparison:
