Motor dreaming

With what seems like a never ending list of things always breaking on my 4runner, I got thinking today, if I were to replace my motor, what would it be? Would I swap in another 3.4, would I look for a diesel, are there other options?

I like to dream of a diesel, but I don't know what obstacles I would have to overcome. Curious to hear what other people would do!

Upgraded 3.4 if it was a budget swap. Short block Chevy if I just had to have a V8. Duramax diesel if I wasn't buying.

I'm pretty sure a duramax would be a shoehorn fit if at all. However the others have been done with good results, me, personally would love a diesel (Toyota brand) but I've heard it cost somewhere in the range of 10,000 to convert.

Singtoe has a 4.7l Toyota v8 in his 4Runner I'd say it's pretty feasible. But I don't know if he has posted how much it cost him to do. I'm pretty sure in his thread he paid $2500 for the sequoia though so there's a start.

What type of reliability do they have? I'm assuming they make significantly more HP than the 3.4? I've got a manual transmission, wonder how that would play into it.

My wife drives an 01', and I drive a 04'. We're going to be using the 04' as a trade-in for a new car, and so I'll be driving the 01' soon.

My choice would be the 4.0 1GR-FE with the dual VVTI that's in the 5th gen. Still a Toyota V6, but with a nice 80hp & 80 lb-ft of torque gain. If Toyota offered a USDM diesel motor, that would be my second choice.

I have been doing lots of research just because I am tired of the automatic behind the 3.4. It is just so slow.

If you want to stick to automatic, then a 5.3 Gen III GM motor would be a great way to go. I believe you can just bolt up the yota T-case to the 4L60-E transmission.

Going manual, which is what I would want to do, presents a bunch of unknowns. I still think the 5.3 Chevy and an MA5 or AX15 would be the solution I would work towards. Novak makes an adapter for $319 that adapts the GM bell housing to the AX15 Jeep transmission. The AX15 (and MA5) is basically the R154 Aisin transmission. It gets confusing reading about all the options. I think that the yota t-case will bolt up to that too.

The biggest problem with the 1GR-FE is that the sump area is wildly different and not very adaptable to the 3rd Gen platform. That's what I have read anyway. Plus, I don't want to be dicking around with VVTi.

I'm not an expert and don't know a whole bunch on them. But from what I've heard they match our reliability. For your manual tranny I wouldn't know I'm sure there are adapters just don't know who makes them. I suggest reading through Singtoes build thread. A lot of good info in there.

Chevy LS1:rockon:

Make that an LS3 and you really have something.

The LSx engines are so much easier to physically fit in the engine bay of a 3rd gen vs. the Toyota V8s.

I've not had any run-ins with the VVTI, but my 04' with 120k on it is running great. Good to know about the 2nd gen 1GR-FE.

Sounds like a SBC is the way to go.

Zero to no chance, but I would be swapping the entire driveline anyhow. Meeting emissions is another challenge.

Personally I don't find it to be a problem, but YMMV.
