The main problem with LSx, or really any non Toyota based platform, is getting a a transmission, transfer case, and axle setup that will fill easily. Its possible to do yes, but once you get all the custom stuff machined or sourced it will cost way more than its worth.
 
a short block is a block without heads. a small block is the size of a short block. You can have a 454 short block because it would have no heads. but a 454 is a big block chevy engine. Short vs long = without/ with heads. Big vs small block = size of shortblock.
 
Meeting emissions is another challenge.

Personally I don't find it to be a problem, but YMMV.
Isn't that basically why GM came up with the E-rod crate engine, already set up with cats and whatnot to pass the sniffers. It's been a while since I've looked into swaps, but the law used to be the engine is required to be the same year or newer than the chassis it's installed into, with the engine's factory emissions systems in place and functional. Places without state emissions inspections, that's not as big of a deal.

I do like the idea of a lightly boosted 5.3 LQ/6L80 combo in a 3rd gen. Way more power than I could ever need.
 
Make that an LS3 and you really have something.

The LSx engines are so much easier to physically fit in the engine bay of a 3rd gen vs. the Toyota V8s.

I was going for the LS1 because its a "budget build" :naughty: My buddy has a 2013 CTS-V manually shifted LSA powered wagon, 556 HP...talk about a sleeper:sleepy:
