I have a 97 Sr5 with 175xxx this is my first oil change on this car as a owner of the car. The previous owner user 10w-30. The readers manual recommends 5w-30. I was thinking of buying 5w-30 synthetic royal purple oil. Ever heard of royal purple ? And I was thinking of getting k&n oil filter. Or the one just bellow k&n. What you guys recomend.

royal purple synthetic is what i use. used it for the past 3 oil changes on my rig. its some good stuff. also looks awesome pouring the oil in and its coming out that nice midnight purple color

I'm going to go with "what the manufacturer designed the engine for". You're not getting married, you're putting motor oil in your truck. Do what the smart guys who wrote the manual tell you to do and forget about it.

Maxlife and Mobil Super High Mileage are two that come to mind. Stick with 5w.

Nice lol... I just figure I don't push this thing too hard... I change the fluids early if I hit the trails pretty hard, but other than that usual intervals for trans/engine
Royal Purple is a great product. But if the manufacturer used conventional oil then thats fine.
Just for education purposes: Some people say that using synthetic in a motor it was not designed for could cause leaks bc it can fit into small places and leak out of seals unlike a conventional. Weather this is true or not I dont know, just something to think about.
Look at API (American Petroleum Institute) they grade oil and pretty much they say conventional oil does the job just as good as a synthetic, unless your car was designed for Synthetic/ blend.
Dont take my word for it but you should read about it for yourself. SAE is also a good for research data.

The 4runner manual says recommended(5w-30) can also use 10w-30. Big question is do I go with regular or synthetic. And I don't think royal purple makes regular 5w-30 I want the best oil for 4runner. As I never owned a Toyota or a 4runner I want to preserve the car as much as I can

I use 5-30 Valvoline High mileage semi-synthetic.
Just started using the 50% recycled variety
Toyota uses Valvoline, which made my decision easy, because Ive been using it in all my vehicles for the better part of 2 decades and it hasnt let me down yet.

lots of great oils on the market. i have been using the Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra (cheap at Walmart) in the 4Runner and her CRV with good results. I send samples every so often to BlackStone labs to check on it. The Pennzoil Plat & Ultra product have a good detergent package and at 5k miles still has a good level of detergents compared to other oils i have tried in my other cars.

Regular oil ? I guess I'm going to go with regular oil not synthetic. As in the manual it does not say anything about synthetic. So I'm guessing what are some good quality none synthetic oils for high millage. On the 4runner manual book it says use API SERVICE SH ENERGY CONSERVING *2
I will disagree maybe not with brand name, but quality and filtration ability. Although brand often goes hand in hand with quality. If you use a lesser quality filter you are not filtering down to a lower particulate size and cleaning the oil nearly as well. Quality of the oil means nothing if you run a cheap filter. All oil will protect your engine well if you use a quality filter and change oil and regular recommended intervals.
True, but with just 2 or 3 real manufacturers of oil filters...everyone just sticks their label on it...it would take real effort find a filter that doesn't meet the OEM specs...unless you shop for auto supplies at one of those 'outlet/discount close out' stores on a brand NOBODY has heard of...And if you do that just to save a buck, then you deserved what you get.
But in general, what you find in your well know department stores/auto part stores is OK.

I think the SN oils are out now...
Although...would any know if the newer oils with significantly reduce Zinc levels affect the OPs older engine? I know this was a concern for the 4.0L Jeep engines, but that was a OHV engine...

May only be a few manufacturers, but they build to the other companies specs so the ones with their name on it might be of a much higher quality than the ones they build for others. There are many different names on filters and when you see test results for those filters there is quite a bit of difference in those results. most filters are adequate and meet vehicle specs, but some I will never put on my truck and others I would, but would change the oil at 3k for sure. Give me an Amsoil filter any day.

I personally recommend going with a OEM toyota oil filter. As far as oil brand and viscosity, there is alot of choices out there. I use to run Mobil 1 5w-30 conventional for the first 10k miles that I owned her and I just recenty switched over to Mobil 1 5w-30 High Mileage Advanced full synthetic oil at 162 miles. Right before I switched over, my oil pan was seeping a little oil and now it seemed to stop.
