Motor swap thread

It's official - whatever happens, my current motor is gone. It's going to take some saving up before I can do anything, so I've got time to think about this.

Option A: Buy a 22R short block from a fellow I know and swap my EFI goodies into it. Cheapest solution, and no damned fun at all.

Option B: 5vze or 3rz swap. I'm considering these because they're OBD-II. I'm not considering them very hard because they're the two most expensive options.

Option C: 7mge swap. I'm seeing Supras in the classifieds for $1500. I like this because it's the most power of the options I'm looking at and also lets me run a W56, which leads to a much cheaper dual case setup.

Option D: Drop $3000 on a stage 2.5 longblock from Putneys: 22RE Performance - Rebuilt Engines I've already got the exhaust, so ordering this motor with a ported intake plenum and adding a Supra 3 inch intake just might be all the power I need. And I wouldn't have to mess around with wiring harnesses and modifying motor mounts and such. But it's still not a 7mge.

Help me make up my mind.

Oh, option E - buy a first gen with a blown 3.0, and swap the 5vze into THAT, along with my locker and the rest of my goodies from the old truck. If I found a 4Runner with a blown 3.0 cheap enough, I'd strongly consider this.

I hear people have put American V8's in these things...of course, I don't have a clue who would do something that stupid...

I like the idea of a diesel swap but if it's a toyota diesel, then the parts will have to be ordered online anytime you need something. Do a engine swap that has been produced in the states and parts will be more readily available.

I would look for the 5vz or the 7mg engines. They will be under 3k for the swap and will have WAY more power than a built 22re. If I had the chance to do it again (which I may soon because I think my engine is burning oil through the piston rings), I would do the 7mgt-e or 5vzfe.

Would you trust the W56 with a turbo, though? I'd almost want to go with an R or G series trans, and then I'm back to needing another $600 to run duals...

1.9l VW TD, can get parts locally to include a ton of donor cars at any given pick-n-pull. It has been done and documented, and seems to be the best bet. On top of everything else it still isnt american.

If I didn't have duals on the brain, I'd have a VW diesel on my list for sure.

JDM 7mge's are listing on Ebay for around $800. That's tempting, but I need to research how much I'd get back if I bought an intact Supra and parted out what I don't use.

lol hp means nothing!!! its all about torque and with a diesel the power is in the torque. 50+mpg and the power to push you over anything. 22re cant touch a diesel 2L-T with high torque and the right gears it will smoke a 22re everyday

I would be afraid to do a motor swap without a whole car as a donor. There are too many other things on the car that the engine uses (relays and such). Basically, I would buy a donor car and strip absolutely everything out of it that the engine does not need. Minimize absolutely every piece of wire that is not essential to the engine. Then, swap all that is left over to your 4runner. This way you'll have a stock configuration for your new motor and no headaches as to what you're missing when the engine won't start or run right.

Yea yea... diesel's and their torque. I agree, torque is king! But that specific diesel engine has less than 140ft/lbs of torque which is less than impressive for a kiesel swap. IF I was ever to do a diesel swap I would look for a 1KD-FTV that has over 250 ft/lbs of torque and still has almost 200hp. A bit more spendy but it's a worth while swap that will have a lot more power than the 22re.

This sounds a lot like wisdom. Thanks!

3RZ-FE
The 3RZ-FE is a 2.7 L (2,693 cc) version. Bore is 95 mm and stroke is 95 mm. Compression ratio is 9.5 to 1. Output is 150 hp (112 kW) at 4800 RPM with 177 lb·ft (240 N·m) of torque at 4000 RPM. This engine features twin, chain-driven balance shafts. It has four valves per cylinder and DOHC. Valve adjustment is by shim over bucket.

3RZ-FE in a Toyota T100
Applications:
1995–2004 Toyota Tacoma 4x4
1996–2000 Toyota 4Runner
1994–1998 Toyota T100
1995–2002 Toyota Granvia
1995-2004 Toyota Hilux
?-2004-? Toyota HiAce
2001-2009 Toyota (Land Cruiser) Meru 4x4(Venezuela)

The 3rz has about 50 hp more than the 22re and about 40ft/lbs more for tq. But still a lot less power than the 5vz and slightly less than the 7m engines.

Unless you get one for a heck of a deal, I would look elsewhere.

Exactly my thought, SV - the only thing I see the 3rz bringing to the table is better mileage. But like I said, I'm open to hearing everybodies opinions, if there's a reason the 3rz would make a better swap I wanna hear it.
