Mounting Maxtrax knockoffs on a Victory 4x4 rack

Like a lot of you, I scooped up the X-Bull tracks when they went on sale on Amazon. They arrived over the weekend and decided to fab up a mounting solution. I wanted it to be easy/ quick to remove, but still secure. I also didn't want anything protruding up from the rack, in case I wanted to remove the tracks and use it for storage, so my only option was a studded knob. Spent about an hour brainstorming at a local hardware store and this is what I came up with:


5.5" 1/4-20 Carriage bolt
5-point 1/4-20 plastic knob
2 nuts
1"OD .5' ID x 2" bushing
1/4-20 T nut to hold it all together

There is exactly 3" of spacing between the little grips on the bottom (see the last pic) so I cut some 5/16 steel into 3"x11.62" pieces and drilled holes to mount in the T slots.

I then marked the spots where the track holes line up, and a 1/4-20 rivet nut on each.

Little bit of paint

And done!
Overall I'm really happy with it! My only concern is corrosion on the carriage bolt, but I'm just going to keep an eye on in and swap with SS if needed.
The total cost was $28 and probably 3 hours of time.

Just received these very ones a few days ago but havent tested them yet.

I have a 4R friend here locally who also has the same, and has used them 5-6 times at the beach in NC. Says they're just as good as any other brand so we'll see!

I let someone borrow mine at the beach in NC. The guy was way too happy with his throttle and was spinning his tires like crazy - which is probably why he got stuck in the first place. He ended up melting some of the nubs off mine which are the same brand here.

Nice job mounting them, OP. I did something similar but your looks simpler and better.

This is a problem with the bigger name brand ones as well.

Loan out some instructions next time you loan out your boards: Always iterate and reiterate to them not to spin their tires.

You may very well have told him, but damn some people love to just try and solve everything with throttle.

One of the pitfalls of trying to help someone!

Looks good! Funny I saw this thread yesterday right after I got done installing my own mounting solution for a Gobi mesh floor. I decided on the opposite from yours as mine comes up from under the rack. Might do something like yours in the future if/when I can make a decent bottom plate.

2x 5" 5/16-18 bolts, sandwiched in with zinc and rubber washers on the mesh, topped off with locking nuts and wingnuts until the hand knobs come in tomorrow.

How's that Victory rack?

I mounted mine up last night to my Prinsu. I used some straps as a test and was planning on making a more solid system like this in the near future. I had severe wind noise with any driving above 55MPH.

Is anyone else experiencing wind noise with traction boards when they are mounted perpendicular to the truck? I think I'm going to try to run them parallel with the truck and see if that helps!

This is a problem with the bigger name brand ones as well.

I wouldn't use them much if ever, basically just some insurance, but at $45 even if a few nubs get rubbed off who cares. If it gets bad enough then replace them.

Great so far! Victory is local to me, and I got the very first one off the line, so there were a couple of issues with mounting it. BUT! I told them about the issues and it seems like they've fixed them on all the future runs.

I haven't, but the RTT creates so much noise that the tracks are probably negligible :laugh:

Mine are on the passengers side but close up to the wind fairing. I think that's the key- keep them closer up front if you have a wind fairing so most of the road wind will be pushed up and over them. The way yours are mounted on the rear, and perpendicular, surely creates lots of drag.

I've found the same thing. The name brand sand rails are better, but only a little bit. They suffer a lot of the same issues as the ones that cost 1/5th as much.

I just used some 1/4x20 x2" Tee-bolts and put them in the channels of the aluminum cross bars and used a washer and a wing-nut to hold them down. I think it cost me a dollar.
