Moving to Denver

Moving to Denver. Looking for suggestions on locations to live. 31 y/o, want to be close to DIA (~1hr or less), wife, 2 young kids. Lots of good suggestions from friends already but looking for as much input as I can get. Thanks y'all.

Planning on buying or renting a house, or renting an apartment? Price range is gonna be needed for most people to recommend something.

The options within an hour of DIA are super diverse. There's a million "neighborhoods" that are completely different and have highly varying prices.

My wife and I found a house in Stapleton and love the neighborhood.
Other good neighborhoods we were looking in:
Arvada
Westminster
Midtown

I have a realtor that I really enjoyed working with. I'll be happy to pass along his info if you'd like. Send me a PM.
 
What are your other interests? I'm over in Lafayette and it is super family friendly and close enough to the mountains and we enjoy taking trips into boulder. Broomfield and Louisville are also good choices. Do you want to live near a walkable old town or are you more of a suburbs and parks sort of family?
 
We might be moving there too within 2 weeks to 18 months(Depending on which promotion spouse gets)

If you use Zillow on an iPad(doesn't seem to have the commute filter on web yet), you have a filter for commute(time away) from a certain place. I was using DTC, and it shows the typical commute from each house you are looking at..

We are looking in the West area from Golden down to Castlerock. Property taxes are really cheap down there, compared to Oregon. 800k house with 1/3 taxes of what we pay here in Portland area for a 550k house... And price per sqft is cheaper too on average.

In CO we just tax everything else lol. Wait until you go to the DMV and they ask for $700 to register your Runner for a year. Man do I miss registering my vehicles in OR. That being said, a little south of Golden is a nice area to live. I know several people who live down there and they all really enjoy it. If you are going to be commuting into DTC, I would suggest picking something that is fairly close so you can avoid roads like I25 if possible. Every major highway around DTC turns into s***show almost every day, and the never ending road construction has made matters even worse.

Yes, please move to Denver. We.... need more people to move here.

No one has done that in the last 5 years.

haha. Jokes aside, [MENTION=79826]absalom[/MENTION] is a forum member and a real estate agent in Denver who is a transplant himself :)

Ah. didn't think of vehicle tax.. Not thrilled about sales tax either, but I guess the income tax is lower than Oregon. They get their 11% or so somehow I guess :)

But for the promotion, he will be making prob 60k/yr more, and hopefully I can find something permament too, so hopefully wouldn't notice the tax too much. Lots of 4wheeling though! Not alot here around Portland that I can find, other than browns camp or FS/state roads, or heading into the Cascades. I miss North Central/Northeastern Washington and N Idaho for 4wheeling.

From what we have been told, max of 18 months and his job will be moving so just starting to look and see what is available.

Crystal Mill is on my short todo list though.. That place looks amazing!

Thanks for the input all. Suggestions are in-line with what others had recommended. We will be residents in the coming weeks. I will be traveling out of DIA 2-4 days per week most weeks per month. Don't mind a drive to/from DIA though as my most recent sales job was all car travel (~25k mi in 6 months)

Funny story, I just bought a place in Monument (I work in Colorado Springs), and the people buying the homes around me are all Denverites who they say they can't afford to live in Denver:redbrick:

Some chick freaked out because I was OC'ing around my home and neighborhood and called the subdivision mall cop.

As to people moving and changing your state. It's inevitable. Washington was super pro gun and conservative when I was a kid. Now....? Not so much.

I know you said 1 hour from DIA, but have you considered 1 hour or less from Eagle County Regional Airport? Flights are probably move expensive from there, but you'll enjoy CO live far more on the western slope vice the front range. The CO front range (Colo. Spring to Ft. Collins) is a miserable place.

yeahhh we really dont need any more people up here either. eagle county airport is by no means a dependable airport, they divert flights if the weather isnt perfect, which it usually isnt. and its a lot more expensive. and cold. and any number of other complaints i hear from people who have tripled the area's population since 2000 and turned it into a suburb of the 7th circle of hell(denver). enough already.
