Moving up to a 2020!

(Update: I will be purchasing this vehicle today or Tuesday. I got a doozy deal in order to make room for the 2021's. It is a SR5 Premium, 4WD).

I have a 2007 4Runner SR5, and love it, but want to upgrade. The new prices are affordable, and I finally drove a new SR5 4WD yesterday. I really like it, and am just trying to get some pro's and con's on here.
I have never owned a 4WD, and have really wanted one for several years. My fear has always been the maintenance, and upkeep (if there is any).
I have been really frustrated with getting rid of the V8 and moving down to the 6, but it felt very good, and I was not let down with the performance. I may try and see if I can afford a premium or limited, to get the passenger electric seat. Important to the wife.

It might be small, but I am wondering what the heck happened, and why Toyota left out the locking fuel door............
I am still scratching my head on that one.
Wanted to get input and see what some of you had to offer.

Pros. Newer tech. Solid build.

Cons. People on forums cry about newer cars.

Maintenance appears to be fluids and not much else. Enjoy your new car.

Hi,

Sounds like your current T4R is a 2WD? PRO of 4WD: Extra traction and capability if/when you need it, provides off-road fun, improves resale value. CON: If you don't do much off-road driving which engages the 4WD, then you will need to keep 4WD components lubed by waiting until it rains, finding a straight stretch of road to occasionally engage 4WD. Dry road with turns will bind the front tires in 4WD, hence the slick straight road requirement. Limited is all wheel drive with different considerations of 4WD. I miss that 4th Gen burger tray and key fib actuated rear window down almost daily. But... The hvac controls are a big improvement over the 4th Gen.

After 31 years since my last new car (a 1988 4Runner), I bought my 2019 TRDOR in October 2018. I’ve been so happy with it that my perspective isn’t the most objective. I genuinely have no complaints. I think you’ll be very happy with yours.

OP, if you don't need a 3rd row seat, try to get a offroad Premium. you get a rear locker and cwal/ terrain control and have the option for kdss plus all of the cushy comforts of the sr5 premium.

I finally added lockers to my sr5 when I regeared and all I can say is worth every penny. Also adding crawl/ terrain. Should have just bought the tail premium (now the ORP) but I didn't do my research.

After 18 years with a much-loved 1999 SR5 4WD 5-spd stick shifter, I put in my order for a 2020 Army Green TRD Pro a year ago, and waited 12 weeks for it to arrive. Things I miss most? Manual shift: I just love that feeling of connection with the machine. Simplicity: way too many friggin gadgets and too much computer automation code going on that I could care less about. Compactness: the 2020 seems to have not much more space inside, but is substantially (and unnecessarily IMO) more bulky and blocky. The '99 even has more stock wheel well clearance even though the roof is about 3-1/2 inches lower. Package fluff I would never have paid extra for: 1.) heated seats (but, hmmm, they are nice on a wicked cold morning, and the wife likes them); 2.) upgraded sound system (but, hmmm, wow it's rockin'); 3.) Crawl control: meh. Like I said, I like the all-manual machine-connection feeling and the expression of skill in managing steep, rough terrain. 4.) Cloth seats: the black "leatherette" burns ya. 5.) Oak (tan) interior: much easier to find things dropped on the floor, and SOOO much easier to keep clean looking. Buyers remorse? Not really. Just a little kicking and screaming into the new trends. I plan to love the 2020 for a long time, too.

I've been in my 2020 now for about 5 months after selling my 2008. Here's my take:

1) Acceleration. The 4th gens had more. I was the biggest thing for me. Wound up buying a sprint booster, set it to 3, and it's now very close to the 4th gen
2) Auto climate control. I used it more in the winter...set it at 74 and let 'er rip. I haven't had any cold months yet, so we'll see.
3) Tail gate (soft) closer: To me, it's kinda 6 of one and half dozen of another but why remove the tech?
4) That's about it.

As for the 4wd, there's really no extra MX other than an additional fluid change and a couple more zerks to grease every now and again. You'll also be able to drive through deeper stuff.
