Has anyone tried to connect an mp3 player to the stock radio (with navigation)? I just want to play them through the system. If I can get the information to show on the display, so much the better. I don't want to use the adapter in the cassette.

What options do I have?

Which modulator did you get? I also had the same problem. I did a little research and ended up with the Alpine for about $60. It allows you to remotly adjust the output volume and frequency to the stock stereo. It really does sound good! I hook my portable DVD player to it, and the sound is pretty impresive on the stock 10 speaker system.

It was the Soundfeeder SF100. It plugs into the cig lghter socket and then gives you 2 more wires. The first plugs into the output of your player. The second is a power jack for your player so you don't have to run it on batteries. The powerjack is adjustable for voltage and has differet size adapters. I am reasonably happy with it. I don't remember if it cost me $20 or $30.

Do you know if I can hook an iPod up to it? how good does it really sound? i've heard that FM Modulators don't really work or sound that good.

Sounds great! Like I said, I hook my portable DVD player to it and I have surround sound movies in my 4runner! I love it! If you buy a cheap FM modulator then the sound quality will be bad. The Alpine unit is perfect! You can adjust frequency and output volume to get the best possible sound from whatever device you hook to it. I do not own an iPod but I would imagine that it would not be a problem. If it has a headphone jack then all you need is a headphone-to-RCA cable from Radio Shack (About $5.00).

P.S. pulling the dash apart to get to the back of the stock radio is an all day job!!!! Prepare yourself.

How do you get movies to play on your navagiation? you said you have surround. i can't get my navigation system to play DVD's. I've been trying to figure that out for months now. Please help.

i think im gonna go for a touch screen monitor and a in car PC...it seems to be the cheapest way to get tons of mp3's in my car. The hard drive units they sell are so expensive. With the PC i can play mp3's, Divx movies, DVD's, and there is software for the interface called media engine. With a touch screen and this setup, it would make a great in car entertainment center.
 
Scion cd MP3 player into 4runner?

I've noticed that the Scion (new Toyota brand) cars come with a cd head unit that looks like its the same size made by Panasonic that plays mp3's. Anyone know if we can install that into the current generation 4runner?
 
I would doubt that the Scion head unit would be a direct plug in replacment for the 4runner. Even within the regular Toyata line of cars, it varies from model to model. You could always try it though. The best way to tell is to compare the diagrams in both shop manuals for both cars.

Well now I'm really hooked up! My work provided me with a new laptop with a DVD player in it. I was able to plug it into my FM Modualtor and strap it down to my folded out burger tray. Now I have both DVD movies (on the 14.1" screen) and wireless network connectivity! All I need now is my PCMCIA navigation unit and I'm ready to go! Oh yea, and all the MP3's I could ever want!

Well I don't have a digital camera.

I mounted the main unit for the FM modulator in the upper glove box cubby hole thing, with Velcro. I then mounted the display unit for it on the outside of the closed flap for the little cubby hole with velcro. I kept it out of site on purpose. I ran a patch cable from the main modulator unit (rca to mini head phone jack) down the back behind the glove box and the plug hides by the lower passenger side floor vent. It's hidden but easy to access and plug stuff into.

Installing the wiring for the FM Modulator is an all day job of pulling apart the center console and dash. I connected the accessory wire to the cigarette lighter (this tells the modulator that the key is turned on), I then had to run a wire behind the dash and out through the firewall to the battery. You also have to remove the stock radio to access the antenna plug.

I just took my time so I would not damage any of the dash materials.
