MPG Calculation?

OK, my parents always told me that I'm a smart guy who lacks common sense so I'm wondering if I'm missing something here or what. How are you guys calculating MPG down to the decimal place? The gas gauge is far from accurate so where do you get a baseline number? I've been trying to figure this out and kind of embarassed to ask but I just have to know.

Man, I know this is going to be so simple that I'm going to hit myself when I find out.

Fill up your gas tank (to the first click) ....

Reset your trip odometer....

Drive .... drive ... drive some more ....

When it is time to fill up your tank ... fill it up to the first click again (to be more accurate ... do it at the same station using the same pump .... )

Now --- note how many gallons you put in your car.

Divide the numner of miles on your trip odometer (the number of miles you just drove since your last fullup) by the number of gallons you just put in your tank.

Voila ... you got your MPG
