MPG decrease with new tire purchase???

I am going to need some help to figure this one out. I picked up a Set of Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventures With Kevlar before making a 1500 mile road trip for the holidays. During my trip I have noticed my MPG has decreased significantly. With the OEM Bridgestone tires I was pulling 22.3 to 22.6 MPG on the interstate but the best I could get this weekend with the new tires was 18.4 MPG.

I thought I had done my homework before purchasing. I reviewed the Bridgestone OEM tire specs and attempted to make a selection very close to that of the original OEM tire specs. OEM tire weight for the Bridgestone Dueler according to TireRack.com is 39lbs and the GoodYear was 41lbs. I didn't think I was adding that much unsprung weight to affect my gas mileage but I may have been wrong here.

Could the overall tread design cause major MPG fluctuations?

Or am I missing other factors like maybe bad gas or possible ethanol fuel mixes that could have affected my MPG?

Weight.
Width.
Tread Pattern.
Tire Compound.
Winter Gas.
Atmospheric Pressure.
Wind.
Loading.
Traffic.
Etc.

This is why you don't take a "snapshot" of mileage. You need to average it over time and several thousand miles. It really means nothing unless it is over time.
 
Its the rubber compound. Lots of examples of this on this forum. You went from a HT (highway tire) to a AT (all terrain), the design name of the tire says it all.

You have to pay to play. For reference I get 15-16 MPG, so it could be worse for you haha :happy:

Hmm. That is a little drastic.

I got Hanook Dynapro ATMs in stock size and my MPGs didn't decrease at all - they actually increased. However I went to a lighter wheel.

I would follow 1engineer's advice. Keep an eye on it for several tanks.

Rubber compound and thread pattern are the two largest changes. Guess I should have done more research. :S
 
I think this is the main reason car companies don't always choose the best tire for the car enthusiasts because they have MPG as their higher priority. I bet the Nitto Terra Grapplers that come stock on TRD Pro's get decent MPG.
 
I solved this issue with my Tundra. How? I stopped looking at the MPG, just set to temperature, instead of MPG and dont ever touch it again.

Not at all. I have changed several times from all season to all terrain with minimal efficiency loss. You just have to check it over several thousand miles with several tankfuls of fuel. My guess is you will lose less than 1/2 mpg.

[MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] - I guess I am just getting wrapped around the axle here when I calculated a 15% loss in mileage just from the last 10 days of use. More observation is required.
 
My Goodyear Wrangler A/T SilentArmor hit me by 10-15% in stock size. You could feel the extra weight of the tire. I hated how they impacted the acceleration more than the gas mileage.
 
Are the new tires P or LT ?

I had Goodyear ATS (not kevlar) on my 5th gen from about 400 miles to about 10k. Averaged right at 20mpg for that entire time. Same size. But P rated. My guess is you have LT tires with higher rolling resistance.

With 285 Toyo AT2's I'm now getting 17-17.5 every tank. So it cost 2.5mpg for the size jump. I just may go back. Haven't decided yet.
