Hi I just recently bought a 2003 v6 4runner, and I m having an issue with the display that reads the MPG and range data. Most the time it reads E01 and that's it but sometimes Ill go over a bump and it will display the MPG data. I was wondering if anyone knew what sensors that display was connected to or knew anymore about this issue?? I don't even know where to begin to troubleshoot it.

Thanks For the Time

instead of starting a new thread I figured I'd post here since I have issues with my display. Please don't think I'm TJ'ing.

When I bought my 05' I could've sworn the mpg/temp display lite up at night. For months I feel like I'm going crazy b/c at night when the lights are on there is no back light on the display. If I want to see what the temp is or miles till empty I have to turn on my map light to view the screen. Am I nut or is there a bulb back there that might be blown.

PS to the OP I hope you get your answer resolved.

Thanks
Judd

Run a search I've came across it before.

There is a few bulbs back there, buy them at the dealer but replace them all.

Open that tray thing under your a/c controls, unscrew the screw then the ac thing and your display should pop out with a little gentle force.

Rather easy fix.

My 07 has started to dim on one side so I'll be doing the bulbs in the near future.

Thank you Mi. I think I noticed this issues just after installing a DNX head unit. I know my clock also shows a different time EVERY TIME I turn the vehicle on. I can set it up to the right time, but once the runners off it seems to just reset itself.

Thanks

Hey Russ. Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the forum. I know you are probably pretty pissed about this problem right now. First off, you said you just bought it - so is there any way you could take it back to the dealer for them to fix? Just a thought.
I just spent some time going through my repair manual (on CD) and could not find any reference to an E01 code. Regardless, it really sounds like something might be loose considering it comes and goes when you hit bumps. There's really not a whole lot to the A/C system. Shoot me a PM and I'll try to send some docs your way about how to check your DTCs for the A/C.

Hi Brad thanks for the info and the welcome. I'm really not pissed at all because despite this issue the car is awesome. I am really impressed with how smooth the motor and suspension is for being a truck and having a hundred thousand miles. I bought the car private party so there really is no recourse plus I knew about when I drove it.

I don't believe the issue is linked to the AC system because the rest of the display works as far as interior temp and outside temp and all the HVAC controls work.

I took the display out and verified the connections to it which seem solid. My thought is that it the problem is related to a sensor somewhere on the truck. My thought was maybe it is a speed sensor?? I searched the forum and Google and found only one other reference to the E01 message, and again in that case the poster said they got the E01 message after going over a bump then it went away...

My question is what sensors are involved with the calculation of the mpg, range, and avg mph? I think I will try to get the service manual and try and track down this issue. any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Did you ever figure this out? I've been searching everywhere and haven't found out why I have E01 on my MPG display.

Here's what I'd do. Take the assembly completely out but opening the little pocket in front of the cup holder but opening and pulling up gently. Take either a Phillips head screw driver or a 10 millimeter socket and remove the one screw (you'll have to look down to see it, kinda looking under the assembly). Then pry on all 4 sides and it should pop out. Unplug the connector and check every wire and see if any are loose. If not, plug it back in and make sure there is a good and tight connection. Re assemble and hopefully that fixes It!

To the op, take the Negative battery cable off and leave off for 10 seconds. Put back on and re set clock, and to reset the auto window feature or the driver window and tailgate window roll all the way down and back up, while rolling the widow up, after it's all the way up hold the switch for 5 seconds and let go. Check to make sure auto window feature still works. Hopefully that makes sense. Lol.
