MPG on your 3rd Gen?

I've had my Runner for a few months. It's bone stock with fairly fresh plugs, wires, air and fuel filters. I've been getting 18mpg's, sometimes close to 19. I'd say I'm driving 70/30 hwy/city. On the highway, I keep the cruise around 72. I'd like to get it closer to 20.

My first 4runner; '97 SR5 bought with 165k miles. Rarely got less than 20 mpg out here in the sticks with plenty of hills. Often 22 hwy.

Second one: '99 SR5 Sport 95k when bought with factory 4.30 gears. Usually 18 mpg. Might get 20 hwy.

I have to admit that I try to get good mileage and I can average the sticker highway mileage on almost anything unless I'm towing a trailer.

'00 Limited / OME/LC 8 Wraps / 285/75 Duratrac's. I don't track my mpg's, but according to the trucks' odometer, from full to empty covers right at 200 miles. The mileage is obviously wrong due to the taller tires...

In other words, my mpg's SUCK

Here's the stats on my 1997 LTD with 407,000 miles on original engine/tranny for the last 45,000 miles when I started using this app.

After seeing this thread I tracked a tank. Got 20MPG with my stock '99 SR5

Probably 75% highway 25% city. Not bad.

Just wish the tank was a bit bigger.

In the few months I've had mine, I usually put 13.5 gallons in it per fill up, and the mileage calculates to 15.3 mpg, +/- .3 depending on city/highway. Gas light almost always comes on right about 200 miles. I do mostly city and not much highway.

The only time it's deviated from that pattern is when I tried the ECT button, and got 14.2 mpg.

I call BS on several of these posts.

2wd and I drive 90%+ on interstate. Fuel calcs are done upon fillup, and range from 20 to high 21's.

I find the engine pretty remarkable because even when I putt around the city a lot more I can't get much below 19mpg.

I'm sitting at around 14.7 mpg but I have a six mile round trip to work and back each day and I'm lifted on 33'' tires, 4WD model, 3'' lift. Would love to be getting better mpgs. Did spark plugs and wires less than 10k ago along with a fresh new K&N filter.

1996 33s 3 inch lift v6 4wd auto and i track every fill up. im going to start using fuelly. i usually get about 12 mpgs the highest recorded was 15.1 and i was hypermiling. i would draft semis, be suuuuper light on the throttle. i find i get better mileage when i get up to speed quickly and stay steady. this is 70 freeway and 30 city. im amazed at the mileage you guys are getting. :wow2:

Location really makes a difference with gas quality and additives. CA puts more additives in their fuel than anywhere else I've seen and it's also 87 octane. My best MPG's were always when I filled up in Oregon, Nevada, Washington, etc.

Best tank on CA gas was 19.8. Best tank on Oregon gas was 21.9.

I only ever get 87 in my 4runner, mainly due to cost per gallon, but I will soon experiment with 89 and 91 for grins and giggles.

I drive CA freeways and streets averaging 200 miles a week just to and from the office and I GOT around 14-16mpg before I changed a defective coil pack.

Extended HWY driving (to and from Reno, NV) I averaged 20mpg (before changing out the coil pack) per 450 miles leg of that trip. I have not driven to Reno since changing the coil pack.

AFTER changing the coil pack, about 2 weeks ago, some basic pump receipt/ODO calculations show me about 15-17mpg in the city. As far as HWY goes, I expect my average to increase to around 21 or 22mpg if I'm cifering my math right.

BTW, this is on a slightly lifted (1.5-2") 2WD '99 T4R running 265s with proper tire pressure.

Oh, and yes, a larger fuel tank would be nice.

Not even the state but the gas stations themselves. You may get 16 from one and 17 from another. Elevation, time of year, freshness of gas... I think worrying about mpg is a huge waste. If people worried as much about their eating habits as their fuel mileage we'd be one hell of a healthy country haha

I have been pretty surprised by mine. 98 Bought it this may with 114k on it changed plugs, oil, air filter, atf, and new aggressive Firestone destinations. My commute is about 70 miles round trip with maybe 5 miles city total. I always am 20 borderline 21 mpg. Even with a good chunk of city driving it only drops down to maybe 18. That's with the 4speed AT as well.

That does seem a bit low. I have similar setup and I was getting around 15-16MPG unadjusted for tires. Now getting about 14.5mpg with mix of city and highway. Not sure if it's summer time or I'm just driving truck harder. I added a can of seafoam this week, changing the air filter, and cleaning the MAF and throttle body. I'm not really worried about MPGs, but use it as a possible indication of how the truck is running.

"Hypermiling" back from a trip (60mph, driving behind semis, truck empty, pre-roof rack) I once got 23mpg. Worst I got was 14mpg... completely loaded, doing 70-90mph coming back from a trip.

Curious, how did you know you had a defective coil pack? My runner starts up rough, if you listen to the exhaust it almost sounds like it's down a cylinder or something rough. After it warms up and I drive it around, sounds and runs good. I just got it so am trying to work out the bugs. I first plan to do a normal tune-up and see if it gets any better. Thanks

From the codes it was throwing, misfires mostly. P0303 was the most common and persistent code, misfire in 3rd cyl.

Also, when I put my foot into it, it hesitated, so it had to be ignition related; or a bad injector, or a vacuum leak, or low fuel pressure, or plugs, or wires... Hahaha
