MPG on your 3rd Gen?

Junkie no sweat man. Any and all info is welcomed. I was clueless to start and now have a little better idea of the different belt driven cooling fan systems. Much appreciated. I fear some people get discouraged because they get flamed for sharing info. Whether it is right or wrong, at least if we share it we can get feedback etc. I've learned an awful lot from the internet about cars and still have so much more to learn. Let's keep the knowledge train rolling

My issue right now. Got 12.5 on this last tank.... [emoji35]

I just drove 1,000 miles this past weekend (LA to Reno, mostly highway with some mountain) with ECT on and got lower mpg than other same trips without. I mostly use cruise control and drive an average of 80mph on this drive.

Without ECT I averaged 19-21mpg
With ECT I averaged 17-19 mpg

To be fair, I also changed one coil pack between the last two trips and may be driving a bit more aggressively lately since throttle response is better; but this trip is mostly flat highway.

So there's that. YMMV

Just averaged 16.6 mpg on a 1600 miles trip. Was mostly mountain passes. This was with my failing fuel pump. Hopefully replaced I can get a little better.

I consistently get 230 miles per tank with my typical everyday driving.
But highest I've had since my lift and everything is 281 miles per tank

Since my sending unit went out a year and a half ago, I've been keeping a close eye on it. I get gas when I get to about 250 miles on my trip odometer and usually fill up with 14-15 gallons. Most of my daily driving I'm getting ~17 mpg. The wife and I drove from Cincy to Pax River in June fully loaded with gear and a dog and averaged 20 mpg. Drove to Cleveland a few weeks ago with just wife and the dog and got close to 21 mpg. I usually drive ~75mph with Cruise Control on and ECT on.

What is the benefit of ECT or does it have any? And what exactly does it do?

ECT button when pushed, raises the transmission shift points. So you hold gears longer and accelerate quicker. Most people can't tell much difference and to be honest, I didn't either when I first got my truck. However, after I swapped three solenoids in the transmission and did a full flush, I can now tell a big difference in how it shifts when ECT is engaged.

18mpg average, mostly highway. Slightly bigger tires. Factor in additional tire size for actual distance traveled, still about 18 mpg. Cruise control, driving realistically. Submerged fuel pump as another member said, so you don't whole tank. Fuel light comes on really early. I once read that this was to keep them from dying on the roads as much as others. Usually see between 225 to 235 on trip meter.

When I first got it, I did all the recommended tune ups and clean MAF, throttle body and all. I also disconnected battery overnight to reset goodies. After a couple tanks, things stayed pretty consistent. If I am hitting tons of city driving and stops, it will drop as expected. Rush Hour doesn't help. Off shifts it goes higher. There is a huge write up, several of them on factoring tire size and other variables to get a better idea of MPG.

I get 250 miles a tank easy.
I pushed it the other day and hit 298 and put 15.02 gallons in.

Not too shabby for a 20 year old truck.

I got the best mileage I've ever seen on a recent road trip out to Idaho and Oregon. Driving mellow, around 65 mph, not a bunch of hills, and I got 24 mpg. I'll say it again, 24 mpg.

I was averaging 21-22 the whole trip. Maybe the fuel in those states burns better than in the People's Republic of California. Less additives maybe?

Now, I love visiting Oregon to mountain bike, but I absolutely hate the state's policy that you can't pump your own fuel. I had heard one theory that it's a way to employ people after they logged the state to death and the logging industry collapsed. Anyway, I don't want some strung out looking crankster touching my truck. When I pull up to a gas station in Oregon, I jump out quickly and at least take my own gas cap off, watch the crankster pump my gas, and then put my own gas cap on and close the hatch. The only station I visited in Oregon that didn't have a scary looking individual wanting the pump my gas for me was a small independent store with one pump and a nice elderly gentleman and his daughter working there. If you're from Oregon and I offended you somehow, get over it, because you know I'm speaking the truth about the gas pumpers in your state. SCARY.

On my 99 2wd 3.4 auto I got 20.3mpg best with 265/70 tires with mostly country road driving 60ish.

Now with 265 75's and running 80-ish interstate it got 18.8 on one tank... Still not complaining because I've owned several others and the Toyota beats their recorded mileage in my experience as follows:
Durango 5.2 - 17mpg
Xterra 3.3 - 16.3 mpg
Yukon 5.3 - 14.2 mpg

26.5 mpg. I just did 6400 km Vancouver to LA then to Guerrerro Negro Mexico and back on the 6 cylinder, manual transmission. I pumped the tires up to 35 and kept stuff off the roof rack. That was mostly (4000 km) freeway driving where I'd try to stick to 60 mph and park myself behind a truck, but a couple thousand of that was rough Mexico roads with off roading and sand, and a decent amount of city stop and go traffic. I bet the freeway sections were 30 mpg or higher. I checked the odometer against the 5 mile highway markers and it is bang on within 0.5%. I am soooo glad I have the manual, I would not want to do that trip in an automatic. My mom has an automatic and I can watch the fuel gauge go down. $480 in gas for the whole trip.

In my 2002 2wd 3.4 auto with 31x10.5x15 bfg kos i am averaging 13-14mpgs with speeds ranging from 35-60mph.

Is that bad? Or should i expect this kind of mileage?

Also if it should not be that low what can i do to try to help correct it?
