MPG on your 3rd Gen?

In this cold local only driving the 97 3.4l auto got 16.87mpg. And she always lets it idle and warm up some. Then drive 2 miles and let someone's dogs out to potty. Then off to another to do the same.

My scangauge reads anywhere from 16-20 depending on my driving. However next week I am doing a 4200 mile road trip so that will be a good test.

After towing a 5x8 uhaul from Michigan to Arizona earlier this week, I would say I averaged about 13mpg. Some tanks were ~11, and others were ~17, but the majority of the trip was traveling through the mountains and dealing with some serious wind.

Just got my 97 Running and I was getting 19 with 255/75 16 on it

I recently did 72 miles on freeway at 65 MPH (all with cruise control) and got 16.5 MPG.

99 5-speed and no matter what I do I get 18
Sometimes 18.1 if I head down I-5 to San Diego. Mixed use at home but still mainly around town.

99 2WD 3.4L automatic on 265/70s running 87 octane

Around town, I average 16-17 mpg streets, but my recent best tankful was 18.4 mpg

I do Los Angeles to Reno once or twice a month, my average on that 500 mile drive is about 20-21 mpg highway with mountains, while my best was 24 mpg with the wind at my back. I can go 320 miles from Gardnerville, NV to Mojave, CA on a single tankful on most days; weather/wind notwithstanding.

My 98 was averaging 16.5, best being 17 but the last couple of times I've been down in the mid 15's. Just added some Redline Si-1 injector cleaner. So hopefully that'll help. I'm through a quarter of a tank and already idling better, so we'll see.

So what's going on with me? I kept good track of the gallons and the miles are pretty unarguable. That's crazy good mpg considering some of the roads I was on. I was on Michelin LTX's 265/70 R16 with about 30% tread left. Maybe because I drafted behind trucks when I could?

When I was only filling gas till the pump auto-stopped, averaging 12-13 gallons, I was seeing that kind of mileage too, but I realized it wasn't totally accurate because of variations in vapor sensing pumps and the extended vent tube in the T4R.

Now when I fill up for record, I slow fill after the pump auto stops until gas almost leaks out of the fill neck it's so full. I record my mileage and zero out the odo Trip counter. Next time I fill up I do it the same and divide the number of miles on the Trip gauge by number of gallons.

Seems to work for me, and yes, I wish I were getting 25+ mpg

Gas gauges are notoriously bad in these. However, may gas light came on today, 244 miles, filled it up and it took 15.6 gallons. OUCH! Mileage in these isn't great, if you're averaging 18+ you're on of the lucky ones. General tune up: plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, PCV and O2 sensor will keep you running as efficient as you can though.

Make sure you use the Dual negative electrode spark-plugs. Denso Pk16tr11 or the pk20tr11 you can alsu get them without the Platinum k16tr11. Ngk also make them for the us market but you will have to look their part number.

Also use the Denso O2 sensor if possible.

On my 99 2wd 3.4 auto I got 20.3mpg best with 265/70 tires with mostly country road driving 60ish.

Now with 265 75's and running 80-ish interstate it got 18.8 on one tank... Still not complaining because I've owned several others and the Toyota beats their recorded mileage in my experience as follows:
Durango 5.2 - 17mpg
Xterra 3.3 - 16.3 mpg
Yukon 5.3 - 14.2 mpg

It's impossible for you to get that mileage.
The accuracy of your checks have to be plus or minus at least one gallon.
Unless you measure your gas use by weight with a fuel bag in the trunk.

So 17mpg can be from 16 mpg to 18mpg
16.3mpg can be from 15.3mpg to 17.3mpg
14.2mpg can be from 13.2 to 15.2 mpg

On average, all three are the same or just about the same.

I forgot to add some things to the spreadsheet so now I'm down to 23.5 mpg for the whole trip which is still really good with all the mountains, dirt roads and city stop and go. I just recorded how many gallons or litres I used at each fill and divide all that into the miles for the trip. I finished and ended at the same gas station pump, filled each time, so it is pretty accurate. I gassed up 23 times.

Did you calculate mpg using american or imperial gallons?

American gallons which are 3.785 litres. Had to convert the litres from my Mexico fills

When it was stock my 2000 5spd V6 4x4 got 20-22mpg on the freeway. Now with 265/75/16 Maxxis Bighorns and the ARB bumper it gets 17-20 on the freeway. All mpg measurements are from a Scangauge II calibrated against a GPS.
