MPG opinions on: 275's with 2/1 lift VS 285's with 3/2 lift

My current lift is 2.25" in front and 1.25" in the rear. I'm getting new tires soon but am concerned which route will provide better gas mileage. May upgrade the lift to accommodate the 285's.

As a comparison of size and weight of the two tires, the 275's are only sold in load range C or higher which makes them a heavier tire than the 285's which can be purchased in load range SL.

For reference:
Firestone Destination A/T: 285/70r17
Load Range SL: 44lbs. per tire
Retail for 4: $675

Firestone Destination A/T: 275/70r17
Load Range C: 47lbs. per tire
Retail for 4: $780


Anyone have any opinions of what route would be better?
Currently I get 17.5 on 265/70r17 and I commute a lot so MPG's are somewhat important. Thanks for any input.

What about 255/75r17? I just moved up from this size to 275/70r18 (33.4" tire, different can of worms) but have nothing but good things to say about the 255's. Narrower= better mpg, just as tall as a 275/70r17, lighter at 43 pounds, and cheaper @ $151 per tire.

if it was me id get the 285s, you won't notice much fuel savings with a 10mm difference in width and you'll be happy you went bigger

neither...in my opinion.

if you are worried at all about mpgs, why are you looking at larger tires at all, or a larger lift?! i went from some street tires in stock size that came with my truck (265/70/17) to 265/75/16 duratracs and lost about 1.5 mpg. threw the icon stage 1 suspension on and it had nearly no affect on mpg.

if you are truly concerned with mpg, you wouldnt get a larger tire size, or have a lift. otherwise, just get what you want a deal with the extra $10-20/month it will cost you in gas.

265 AT to 275 AT I lost about 1mpg on my daily drive.

275 to 285 is likely another 1 mpg.

So... pick how much you can stand to lose for bigger tires and go with that

I went 275 instead of 285 for both mileage and to have no real rubbing issues.

Even at 275 I just barely rub the front mud flaps and at full stuff it juuust rubs the plastic at the top of the wheel well with a 2.5 in lift in front (2 in back)

Any lift and non-stock tires will decrease mileage. If it is that big a concern, you might invest in a cheap econ box and go with the big boy lift.

What about 255/75r17?

x2. I went to the 255/75r17 Destination A/Ts last fall. Basically a 32.5" tire as they list it on tirerack, C rated, more narrow than stock (less rolling resistance). 45lbs per tire IIRC.

Thanks for all you guys input. Only reason I want to go up is basically cause i'm having a pissing contest with my boss who bought an 08 4runner. I may end up sticking with the 265s and swallow my pride. :smash:

The tall skinnies are out of the question cause I have a 9" wide wheel, otherwise id be all over those.

Personally no. I've got LT E's myself and think they're great. Awesome on the road, awesome off road. Seems to be a lot of fear of E rated tires, personally I don't get it. The KO2s and the Icons really make a great combo, nothing at all stiff or harsh about that setup whatsoever.
