MPG still low

I had a thread about this about a month or 2 ago, and still have the problem. Most people are getting 15-18 mg with their 4WD V8 4runner's but i'm still getting 12.8-ish. The only time it reaches 15 or 16 is if I drive for over an hour non stop on a freeway. I use 89 octane fuel, and I don't accelerate fast from stops.

Any suggestions? Should I call Toyota about it? It doesn't seem right to be getting this low.....

I take it your getting this reading from your display?

Try taking a manual count. Or if you are on the highway for over 15 minutes reset the counter as your going, as it takes into account all the time between the last reset.

They aren't real accurate to begin with, but not resetting it could be the issue.... I highly doubt your getting that bad of gas mileage.

What's the exact number of gallons 4th gens hold, so I know what to divide it by next time I fill up?

Fill it up to the top ..... you should be able to squeeze an extra gallon in.

Reset your trip meter to 0.

Drive your normal routine.

Fill it up again the same way and do the division. Divide the miles by the gallons (and tenths). If you do that 3 fill ups in a row you will have an accurate MPG.

Works as long as the tank is full..... makes no difference how many gallons the tank holds and it is listed in your manual.

Have you checked your air pressure? Do not bother with 89 octane the regular will work fine.

Calculating MPG based on 1 tankfull will NOT give you the true value.

I calculated my MPG over ~ 1000 miles using the method below:

1. Fill up your tank and reset the trip odometer to "0". ***DO NOT RECORD THIS GAS PURCHASE, it is not used for the MPG calculation***

2. Record the number of gallons you purchased every time you buy gas. Also, you do not need to full up every time as long as you write down how many gallons you bought.

3. Once you reach the predetermined odometer reading, fill up the tank.

4. Add all you gasoline purchases that you recorded.

5. Divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons.

That will give you your true combined MPG.;):

My tire pressure light came on last night, as is still on today so I am going to make sure they are all back at 32 in a bit.

I think it's less than a 23 gallon tank though because when i'm close to empty it only takes around 17, so my guess is somewhere between 19 and 21.

It is 23 gallon tank.

My manual calculations pretty damn match my comp. Remember the comp. only gives average MPG.

Most find their comp's to be way off , I find mine to be pretty accurate.

Milage : city/rural 15.5-16.5 ( no matter how aggressive I drive , and I drive aggressive )

Hiway: depending on wind conditions I've pulled just over 20 and as little as 16-17. ( basically empty )

Mine shows 12.8 for the same stuff that you get 15.5-16.5 and that's even when I haven't driven aggressively for at least 2 weeks like I used to, and even after resetting it multiple times. So I just don't get it.

It may sound dumb, but try putting some extra air in your tires. My Bridgestones will hold "44 psi maximum" -- so I run about 38 to 42 psi in them.

If you are going off-roading or desire crisper handling, then use less air; but more air will ever so slightly decrease your rolling resistance.

If your "low pressure warning" light came on, I suspect you are down in the 25 to 28 psi range.

Be safe!!

P.S. I'll sell you my V6, so you won't use as much fuel.
:biggrin2:

Fill it up to the top ..... you should be able to squeeze an extra gallon in.

Let the pump stop itself. Do not put extra in it.

Try to fill up each time at the same gas station and same pump each time (eliminate as many variables as possible).

Average several calculations together.

The amount the gas tank holds does not matter in your calculations for mpg. Just how far you drove divider by how many gallons you used to go that distance.

You do not have to run it down to empty to get accurate readings.

Concerning your mileage....I've read a lot of owner reviews on many sites. Your type of gas mileage is not unheard of with the V8. Many seem to get a little higher, but there are plenty that are right with you.

WHAT'S THE AVERAGE ON MPG ON A 4X4 V6 LIMITED

What's the average on a 4x4 v6 Limited? mine is a 2007 and I can get more than 14 MPG.

I installed yokohamas avs st 285/60/17 what pressure should I be using 30 at the moment.

Between 32 and 40, depending on how you want it to handle and ride. I keep mine at 33-34 since it's 60's-70's in the day, and low 40's at night. Helps keep the light from comming on when driving home late at night.

I'm getting high 19s to 20mpg. The best was 23.7mpg, worst was 15.7mpg.

I keep my tires at 36-37psi all year round.

I too have my tire pressure at 36-37psi. I had the pressure up to 40 for a while in the beginning but noticed that the truck floated a lot on the freeway. I went down to 36 and the floating is minimal now.
