I'm curious what people are getting with or without upgrades. I feel my mpgs got real low for the upgrades I did.. I have an 07 sport 4runner with the metal tech extended travel kit. Ext. Travel coilovers in front and 2.5 shocks in rear (Icon) and the truck is sitting on 255/80r17 cooper discoverer st maxx....and my mpg went from 17-18 to 14-15? With very conservative driving.

Trying to see if this is normal with these upgrades or if I should start looking elsewhere to pinpoint the problem.

I drive a pretty stock 2006 Limited with the V6 at about 188,000 miles and I average between 16.5 and 17.5 when calculated manually. Winter blend fuel generally knocks around 1 mpg off my average.

Admittedly, if I were to just get on a highway and cruise for a longer distance without stopping and starting as much as I normally do I can get as high as the low 18's, but these rigs are not known for their fuel efficiency; they're known for their reliability and all-around capabilities.

Have you compensated for the tire size difference and resultant error in your odometer? The stock tire is a 265/65R117 which is about 30.5" in diameter. Your new tires are 33" in diameter, which is an 8% difference. That right there will take your mileage from 17 down to about 15.5 if you don't account for it when you do the math.

You'll see a bigger MPG difference after tires/mods in a V6 than in a V8. The V6 has to do more work, keep at higher RPMs to keep you moving while the V8 doesn't have to struggle as much.

Just to clarify on this because it could be confusing if he doesn't understand what you mean.

Your 15.5 mpg isn't accounting for the 8% difference in diameter of your new tires. So this means you need to do 15.5 mpg x 1.08 to arrive at your actual MPG which is 16.74 mpg.

I have a stock 04 V6 with over 190,000 miles now. I'm down to below 15mpg here for the last couple months (mostly city driving, but usually 60 miles of highway driving per tank). I suspect one of the A/F sensors isn't working properly, but I haven't gotten an OBD scanner out that can read the fuel values to see if I'm right.

The other more likely explanation is that my wife is driving it which means it's spending a lot of time idling and driving around town so the mpgs are way down. :noidea:

I too, get about 14-15 MPG since rocking the same tires and lift as you...I also have the SW Front bumper but still, the same no matter how this thing is driven...perhaps it's a winter fuel mix debacle too...but perhaps not...

Techstream can show you live values and related calculated trim levels in real time. You will have to get a PC, an Xhorse VIM and a copy of techstream. Not sure if there are "scanners" that have access to this data.

5100s, FJ springs, winch, and I carry way too much crap in the back (fridge, recovery gear, tools). That plus running 255/75R17 mud tires and I get a whopping 16mpg if I baby it. Today's fillup came out to 15.5....

14-15 commuting through the city
15-16 not towing on long highway trips

I have an empty truck. Just suspension and tires(275/65/18 Toyo AT2) w/V8.

My lifetime average is 13.4 * 5.1% = 14.1mpg
Last 6x fill-ups is 12.1 * 5.1% = 12.7mpg

I was expecting maybe 1or 2 mile difference.
Looking forward to the 10-12 range hahaha.

I haven't manually calculated yet, just going off of what the car/ torque app is telling me .

Those tires are heavy. I know, I have the same ones. Before I started upgrades, I got close to 15 mpg.

I've got a 3" lift, roof rack, RTT on the top full time, a plano box full of close to 80 lbs of recovery gear on the roof, tools inside, and the same 255/80/17 ST Maxx's.

11 MPG. mostly city. I can barely get it up to like 13 or 14 if I drive for hundreds of miles at 60 mph.

Even with all the other changes I made, the single biggest drop in MPG i got was after I added the tires, and that was after months with every other part of the setup I listed above. Heavy tires suck down that gas like no tomorrow.

So, I get using the calculations to account for larger tire diameter, but wouldn’t that only come into play if trying to compare mileage to the dash display? If you are calculating based on miles driven between fill ups, then it’s straight division, otherwise, you are calculating based on what it should be, rather than what it actually is, no?

If you have different size tires than stock the only way to know the actual miles driven is using a GPS to track actual miles driven, the odometer is not going to be accurate if you have bigger or smaller tires, once you know the actual miles and gallons used then you can manually figure the MPG.
