After what felt like it would be a never ending search, I finally found a 4th Gen that met the requirements I was looking for. I put up a WTB ad here as a last ditch effort and to my surprise it worked. Seller was in Arizona, so I jumped on a plane and drove it back to California. This is the first Toyota I've owned after many years of looking, and I'm definitely drinking the kool-aid now.

The drive back was about 400 miles, but it could have been 4,000 and I would've been smiling the whole way. Pulled off a random side road in the middle of nowhere to grab some sunset photos.

January 2022

The next few weekends after I picked it up were spent doing some smaller things in between all the busy holiday/family stuff.


First I removed the steps, swapped the V8 tow hitch for the V6 version, and installed the MagnaFlow exhaust.

Next was a fresh set of WeatherTechs to clean up the interior. It came with a pretty beat up set of tan WeatherTechs, so this made a massive difference in the interior appearance.

Finally I gave one of those headlights restoration kits a go because the headlights definitely had some haze going on.

February 2022

This is when the fun stuff started to arrive. I was able to get two desert trips in before the suspension and wheels showed up which was cool because I got to experience how capable it already was in it's (basically) stock form. Also, it gave me a good feeling of my starting point and what things I felt it needed the most... Which was of course suspension and tires haha.


Had a couple good mail days to start the month off.

Everyone likes some good before and afters right?

Suspension, wheels, and tires on. After running into the typical unplanned stuff along the way, I decided to call it there for the weekend. This is before the Dobinsons rear coils went in and with almost no preload added to the coilovers.

February 2022

Then it was time to finish up the remaining stuff I didn't get to the prior weekend.


Put in the Dobinsons C59-677V rear coils, the RIG'd ultraswing, and the spare.

Threw on the Spidertrax 1.25" spacers and painted the rear hubs.

Since so much time was spent working underneath it, my OCD kicked into overdrive and I applied a little elbow grease to the rest of the undercarriage :shrug:

Thanks, appreciate that! Working on getting the rest of the stuff up, but it's taking longer than I thought it would haha.

March 2022

First shake down trip after the suspension install was Mojave Road. Got in some solid dirt miles over the course of a day and a half, and there were a lot of cool things to stop and check out along the way. I'd really like to run this route again to explore the area more... Next time I won't be detailing the undercarriage right before the trip though. Couple murky water crossings and some muddy streams quickly undid my work lol.


It was insanely windy the weekend we ran it, so between that and all the driving not many photos were taken unfortunately.

Picked the Demello bumper up from powder coat. I never got to see it before this as I drove it straight from Demello to the powder coater and never took off the wrapping. Upon seeing it finished I was impressed with the build quality and design.


Here's a photo of the side you don't usually get to see. Thought it was cool the way they used skeletonized internal supports for extra strength where needed while also keeping weight reasonable.

Before and after. Bumper, Baja Designs, and SDHQ billet ABS guards were added.

How bad is the rake? It’s hard to tell from the photo. I’ve been wanting a new bumper but was concerned about this.

It actually wasn't horrible, but If you're going to add a bumper and/or winch you'll most likely have to make suspension adjustments.

I bet it would look good! If you have instagram check out the account "trdclb". It's a tacoma, but it's silver with color matched front and rear bumpers and I think it looks clean.

Got in a quick one day/one night trip up to the local mountains with some buddies. Little wheeling, some shooting, and a couple drinks around the fire... Hard to beat.

Picked up an ARB dual compressor. I have to say this is probably my favorite mod to date (and most practical). I almost went the CO2 route for the speed of airing up, but glad I didn't. I've been more than happy with the performance of the ARB and it's nice not having to deal with tank refills before trips.


Decided to mount it behind the air box and was surprised no one makes a 4th gen mount for this location? Here's what my buddy and I came up with:
