My 4runner is coming up on 3 months old, so I'm not sure how long it takes to break in the engine. I'm still getting around 12.2 or 12.3 mpg according to my meter on the dashboard, but everyone else seems to be getting 13-14 mpg. Does it take this long for it to break in all the way? I don't think I drive it too hard.

The meter on the dashboard can't be trusted, but it's usually too optimistic. What you're telling us sounds pretty low. I've got a lead foot doing 100% city driving and I get about 15 out of the V8.

Start doing some computations using the odometer and the amount of gas the pump says you put in, and see what numbers you get.

About the same. With other cars, I noticed that breaking it in improved gas mileage by 1-2 MPG when I was doing a lot of highway driving. With city driving, I would imagine that any similar improvement is pretty small. I really haven't noticed anything.
 
You may want to change all the fluids to synthetic (F/R/C diffs, engine oil). Make sure you maintain enough air pressure in the tires (I run 40 psi). You should see 14/16 mpg in the city.

My V8 says 18.4 and that's with my lead foot wife driving highway and city mix.

I never really did the calculations to see how off the computer is....:confused:
 
Yeah mine has read 12-ish ever since I got it, and only went up to 13.4 when I drove for 2 hours to palm springs on the freeway. Should I take it in to the dealer?
 
i drive mine back and forth to my shop only 3 miles per trip, 7 days a week. i drive it like i steal it since day 2 got the 4R. constant reading between 13.5 to 14.9 even i reset it once awhile. but i did oil change on the first 1000 miles and use shell gas every tank.
 
It's just an assumption, but would 4x4 vs. 2WD play a role here? I have a 2006 V8 2WD and my gauge always says around 18.4.

The 4x4 I test drove said around 15.
 
Yeah 4X4 and V8 both contribute to gas mileage, but it's not like you would be saving a whole lot. Mine is both V8 and 4x4 and I only use premium at chevron. I figure, what's another 6 bucks each time you fill up? But i just don't know why it stays in the low 12's.
 
well in my 2008 v8 sport i get 17.8-18.6 in town and 22-23 on the highway and thats with only 1000 miles on it

i only pump regular 87 octane. cuz i read some articles somewhere, forgot where was it, while back ago. some research saying that premium gas will lower your mpg if your car is not required 91 octane. my friend's 06 camry and other's 97 miata did a quick test. both scenario showed regular gas run a little more mpg than premium gas. as my 99 accord, i pump 87, 89 and 91 for testing, 87 and 89 show similar numbers on mpg but 91 actually was 2 mpg lower. i am not any expert but i guess octane rate also plays a role in mpg as well.
 
2300 miles so far on my '07 2WD V8

Each tank has been above 20 MPG (actual) with a mix of city and highway driving

Computer is showing 21.6

All on 87 octane

well, you can always try your next tank with 87 or 89 and keep your data log for the next tank again also keep an eye on the on-board reading. it's not hurting anything but will save you a buck or two. :D :D
 
Just filled up Friday and reset MPG meter and I'm at 12.8 I believe and I haven't left town (all 25MPH short trips). I had my 4R since January and have determined that the MPG computer is always 1.5 to maybe 2 MPG high. I average 19 (by the computer ) on highway doing 75 or 70 (depends if I'm on interstate or not). I was expecting a little better out of the V6.
 
Unless you are towing heavy loads up steep inclines there is no need for anything other then regular fuel!

My 04 V8 says 20.1 for about the last 8 months or so.

Every once in awhile it will drop to 20.0
Not sure what the actual MPG is tho.

I use mobil 1 synthetic and I also put a tru-flow air filter in, and use 89 octane for fuel.
