Did a little MPGxperiment.

Last weekend I drove 298 miles round trip to drop the dogs off at the kennel. The drive is 75% highway and 25% two lane country road. I averaged 14.4mpg.

Today I made the exact same drive to pick up the dogs. For this trip I removed my Yakima roof rack and averaged 15.7 mpg.

Bottom line, not a big enough difference for me to leave it off.

Agreed. However, we board them with the breeder they came from and it is like a vacation for them too. They get an acre to run around on. They'd be lucky to get a 10X10 concrete square at a city kennel.

+1. 80% of my 137,000 miles have been city. Back when it was new I averaged about 17. Now I am lucky if its over 13.

usually get close to 19 mpg at 70 - 75 mph interstate hwy

couple days ago: 300 miles, 15.1 mpg, ethanol free gas (Meridian, MS), pulling a loaded u-haul 5x8 trailer 65-70 mph interstate hwy the whole way
only way I knew the trailer was there was the regular downshifts, sometimes two clicks, going up hills with cruise control on

It is exactly like summer camp.

I have two Labradors. Jagermeister and Chili Pepper.

I think speed has a big factor here

I drove from Las Vegas to Disneyland (Anaheim, CA) which was about 250 miles each way. I averaged about 16 mpg ranging from 80-85 most of the way. When I drove back I stayed closer to 80 and averaged closer to 17mpg.

What speeds have you guys noticed?

With the 2005 I used to have (V6) we averaged about 22mpg doing 80mph on the highway - but part of that is the smaller engine and the other part is optional H2 instead of constant H4

I have a pretty much stock 2003 V8 Limited with 90,000 miles on it. I added Spidertrax wheel spacers and some chrome trim and that's it.

Last time I checked the truck computer, I am at about 18.1MPG average.

I generally drive 60% highway at 60MPH and 40% city at about 35-40MPH.

I have a pretty much stock 2003 V8 Limited with 90,000 miles on it. I added Spidertrax wheel spacers and some chrome trim and that's it.

Last time I checked the truck computer, I am at about 18.1MPG average.

Just an FYI, the truck computer is VERY optimistic.......to say the least.

My truck says I'm getting 16.2 when I am actually getting 14.5.

Do yourself a favor and actually calculate the mpg at your next full up.

yea my gas mpg has been sucking majorly lately too... averaging about 14-15 daily driving (half highway/half in town) and this past weekend i pulled a 6x8' open trailer with 2 kayaks on it, and another kayak on my roof, drove about 75 miles on the interstate staying between 65-70 mph and averaged just under 12 mpg. blah!!

To the OP.. A) there are way too many variables involved to say that your roof rack alone was responsible for a 1.3 MPG change in gas mileage, or whatever it came out to be. B) For the average U.S. driver at current fuel prices, 1.0 MPG is equal to about $20/month. So in your case, IF it were true that the roof rack was making that much difference, you'd throwing away $25/month just by leaving it on your truck. That's not worth taking it off? You must have deeper pockets than I do.

My calculated highway economy is 15.87 at 70 mph over three tanks of gas. 21 gallon fillups. drove exactly 1000 miles.

33 inch mud terrains, skids, gobi rack. V6

I am very happy with that

Ahh nope I have 2.5 day star with 265-70-17 mt/r and yes when I drive like a retard I do 16.5 city and 18 highway but when I drive like a normal person I get 18c and 21h

I also have a k&n "cai".... Recently did a complete fuel system cleaning, injectors included. Cleaned my MAF sensor which was surprisingly filthy...cleaned my throttle place which was also absolutely caked with sludge. I also run premium fuel all the time. Run my 10ply tires at 45psi....I also live in a rural area so I rarely deal with any sort of traffic.
