Got my runner dirt for the first time yesterday.

I really didn't think I went through too much mud, but when it came time to clean, holy $h!T was there a lot CAKED into the rear wheels wells and mud flaps. I'm really surprised the 4Runner holds SO much mud in there.

Is there an aftermarket solution to prevent so much mud from collecting into the rear wheel wells?

Trick is to not let it bake on for 48hrs prior to getting to it and to find a pressure washer style car wash. Knock it down with that and then give it a proper wash at home. That’s my strategy at least.

Surely someone will take your money for some bs spray that will “make it easier” but that shits for the birds. Man up and just hose the ***** off. I will say though for tires, a proper heavy duty brush is an absolute must.

I literally took it home 10 minutes after getting muddy and power washed it in my driveway. Took almost an hour just to get all of the mud off, not including washing afterwards and the 30 minutes of cleaning my damn driveway! :lmao:

The biggest issue is inside the 1/4 panel where the wheel well folds and is welded to the 1/4 panel; it's like a shelf for mud and the power washer can't reach it. I had to scoop it out by hand. The mud flaps are the next big issue; there are pockets that just hold gobs of mud.

Not doing that, plus that wouldn't get the caked wheel well mud out. Would just tear up the paint. I know it's a 4Runner but I want to keep the special paint looking good for as long as possible

Like the others have said, don't let it bake and especially dont let it freeze if you're mudding in winter lol. Took me quite sometime with the pressure washer to thaw the mud lol.

Hate to break it to you, but all that mud acts like a grinding paste on that special paint since it's essentially a slurry of sand and rocks.

Believe me, I know, thats why I pressure washed it off right away and will be getting a paint correction/ceramic coat this weekend!

Definitely understand your desire to protect the AG paint job. I recommend going with XPEL or 3M film and then ceramic coating. You’ll have another layer of protection for anything that kicks up during your drive home.

Feel your pain. Did the same the other week and it took about two hours to get all of the mud out from all the nooks and crannies in the undercarriage and wheel wells. You don't have rock sliders or Predator steps so that's a plus because getting the mud out from under the steps was a PITA. The pressure washer wand doesn't reach in those certain spots and was all hand scraping.

I also 2nd the Xpel as I didn't need to be careful with washing the muddied body since the Xpel Ultimate+ is self-healing.

Though used, mine was sparkling clean with pristine Midnight Metallic Black paint when I left the dealership.
Hour drive home, last 12 miles was dirt roads and it had rained earlier in the day. Could have gone the long way, added 40 miles and only 3 miles of dirt. The new truck was dirty and muddy.
The next day it got some "Arizona pinstripe". I prefer the first scratches be from me having fun than some idiot in a Walmart parking lot.
I have ran it through the carwash in town. It stayed clean for the 3 hours we were in town. It was dirty when we got home.
Now it gets washed when it rains.
If I'm going to do anything underneath it I'll park it over a sprinkler for a few hours (ironically making a mud puddle) then pressure wash the underside at work.
But this is it's normal condition

I would absolutely LOVE to wrap in Xpel, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money for paint protection. The lowest quote I got was $4,800 not including the ceramic coating, and the most expensive was $8k not including the ceramic! I could damn near have the rig repainted at that price! I'll stick with the ceramic and have it redone every 2-3 years (if I keep it hat long).

Haha, thats one way to do it! I think I'm going to attempt to spray ceramic the undercarriage to see how that helps for next time!
